Jennifer Nettles made it clear in 2019 that she wanted equality for the women of country music when she walked the red carpet at the CMA Awards with her message on her attire. The Sugarland singer wore a white pantsuit with a pink train that, when opened, read “Play our f***in’ records.” Please and thank you”. The back said “Equal Play”.
Nettles’ very public portrayal was actually related to the lack of women being played on country radio. A number of other women in the genre have also spoken openly about the discrepancy over the years, including fellow Nettles like Underwood and Miranda Lambert.
Nettles was asked about her bold fashion choices in an interview with Rolling Stone. “When I heard that the CMAs were going to celebrate women and that I was going to be invited, I thought, ‘What an amazing opportunity to take the conversation beyond the applause and the ritual and actually try to take it forward and release it into the public consciousness.’ and also to send a message to the industry,'” she said. Well, she certainly has. This year, the awards show made a point of highlighting more women in the genre, including nominating Carrie Underwood, Reba McEntire and Dolly Parton as host.
