As the slogan says, People Make Glasgow, and in some cases Glasgow has made some household names.

Home to Scottish Opera, Scottish Ballet and the National Theater of Scotland, as well as some of the premier concert venues, Glasgow has nurtured talent from musicians to film and television stars.

Glasgow is home to many celebrities, some of whom have risen to fame and really made a name for themselves.

Lorraine Kelly

Most popular

Lorraine Kelly, better known simply as Lorraine due to the show she has hosted since 2010, has also hosted various other shows including Daybreak, This Morning, Good Morning Britain, GMTV and more.

In 2021 she was named a CBE for services to broadcasting, journalism and charity.

Although Lorraine is known for living in Dundee, she was born in Glasgow and lived in the city until moving to East Kilbride where she attended high school.

Graham McTavish

The 61-year-old is best known for his roles in the Hobbit film trilogy, in which he portrays Dracula in the Netflix animated series Castlevania and Dougal Mackenzie in Outlander.

In 2020, McTavish tried his hand at writing alongside his Outlander co-star Sam Heughan, which proved to be a booming success when their book Clandlands: Whisky, Warfare, and a Scottish Adventure Like No Other reached number one on the New The Best Seller list the York Times.

Born in Glasgow, McTavish lived in the city as a child before moving away. He now lives in New Zealand.

Kevin Bridges

Kevin Bridges is a Scottish comedian and has also had many TV appearances as a panelist on shows such as The Big Fat Quiz of the Year and Comic Relief.

Frankie Boyle

Born in Pollokshaws, Boyle is a comedian, frequently appearing on shows such as Mock The Week, hosted by Dara O’Brien.

Its content can be seen as somewhat controversial, but has still bagged its own show titled Frankie Boyle’s New World Order as of 2017.

Gordon Ramsay

Ramsay has been a TV personality for well over a decade and has gone viral for his tirades on several occasions, most notably on his hit show Hell’s Kitchen.

Although Ramsay had a distinctly English accent, he was born in Johnstone and had trials with Rangers as a youth.

Billy Connolly

Sir William Connolly CBE, better known as Billy Connolly, is an actor, retired comedian, artist and more. He has acted in films such as The Hobbit, Mrs Brown, Quartet.

In 2017, Connolly was knighted at Buckingham Palace, just weeks after his 75th birthday.

Robbie Coltrane

Coltrane rose to fame as Rubeus Hagrid in the Harry Potter film series and also rose to prominence as Valnetin in the James Bond films Golden Eye and The World Is Not Enough.

James McAvoy

McAvoy has a great acting resume and has appeared in The Chronicles of Narnia, X-Men and Deadpool.

He enjoyed a bit of popularity on the British show Shameless before starring opposite Angelina Jolie in the film Wanted and finding huge success in the 2016 film Split.

Lewis Capaldi

The Scottish crooner rose to fame in 2019 when his hit song ‘Someone You Loved’ reached number one in the UK Singles Chart and stayed there for seven weeks.

It also performed well internationally, peaking at number one on the US Billboard Hot 100 and being nominated for a Grammy Award. The song earned Capaldi the 2020 Brit Award for Song of the Year, and that same evening he was awarded Best New Artist.

Sir Alex Ferguson

A football icon in the truest sense of the word. He won a European Cup with Aberdeen before spending 26 years at Old Trafford, winning two Champions Leagues and 13 Premier Leagues with United.

He oversaw the Class of 1992 and brought a certain Cristiano Ronaldo into the Premier League from Sporting Lisbon.

Gerard Butler

Born in Paisley, Butler has had a great career. He arguably got his big break in the 2009 film Law Abiding Citizen before appearing in the 2010 film The Bounty Hunter alongside Friends icon Jennifer Aniston.

He has since starred in Olympus Has Fallen before starring in the two subsequent films.

The 52-year-old is said to have a fortune of around $40 million.
