8 Bollywood Celebrities Who Have Opened About Their Mental Health Issues

New Delhi: Both mental and physical health are critical components of overall health. Our emotional, psychological, and social well-being all contribute to our mental health. It influences our thinking, feeling and acting. It also influences how we deal with stress, interact with people and make good decisions. Mental health is vital throughout our lives, from childhood and adolescence to maturity.

No matter how progressive we claim, mental health is still a huge taboo in our culture, and we rarely discuss it freely. However, Bollywood celebrities have started speaking out about it on public forums to convince people that being mentally ill for a short period of time is perfectly normal and that it’s okay to be open about it. They also discuss how they overcame adversity with the help of family and friends, and they encourage us that in order to live a happy life, even when things don’t always seem to go well, we must fight and overcome adversity.

Here are some Bollywood celebrities who have spoken about their mental health struggles and shared their recovery stories.

1. Shraddha Kapoor:

Shraddha Kapoor first admitted to feeling scared in 2018 while celebrating the success of her film Stree. Speaking to the media, she said she has had anxiety issues for the past three to four years and deals with it positively every day. The 32-year-old actress also once explained that after the release of Aashiqui 2 in 2013, she suffered from ailments that had no physiological explanation.

She strongly emphasizes that fear is not a struggle. Instead of fighting it, you have to embrace it and accept it as a part of yourself and approach it with love. That makes a big impression. Whether a person is afraid or not, they should always know who they are and what they stand for. She has long battled anxiety and has gone from not understanding it to embracing and managing it.

2. Ileana D’Cruz:

In an interview, the actress spoke about her struggle with body dysmorphic disorder, anxiety and depression, and how the continued care and love of family and friends had helped her through these difficult times. She once claimed that she used to sit in the corner and cry for hours. In previous interviews with the media, she has spoken candidly about her past and how she firmly believes that when people are unwell they should be checked out and not be afraid to do so.

Ileana has spoken about mental health issues on several occasions. In one of her previous interviews with a news outlet, she spoke about the stigma surrounding mental health. The actress reportedly went to a therapist because she had to. She says it’s not illegal to seek help. It’s not unreasonable to cry, sob, or just lose your temper every once in a while. It’s all right. It’s natural, it’s human. Ileana continued that we need to mainstream the discussion on a variety of issues, not just mental health. She believes that if we opened up and just listened to others, we would be much more sensitive and healthier.

3. Hrithik Roshan:

Actor Hrithik Roshan encouraged people to realize that mental illness shouldn’t be stigmatized; they are serious problems that require help. He said he went through ups and downs, sadness and helplessness. He claims it’s a common occurrence and that we should all talk about it because we all have ups and downs in our lives. They are significant because they both contribute to our evolution. When we’re going through a difficult phase, it’s important to keep a clear head. Sometimes the brain takes over and feeds you unwanted thoughts that aren’t related to your life goals, and that’s when we need an objective perspective.

4. Sanjay Dutt:

Sanjay Dutt has had more difficulties than most Bollywood stars. He said his imprisonment caused him to become depressed after losing his mother and wife to cancer, followed by suspicions of involvement in the 1993 Mumbai blasts. The actor reportedly couldn’t sleep.

Recently in 2020, the 63-year-old actor was also diagnosed with stage 3 cancer, which actually shook him up. He is said to have cried for hours thinking about his wife and children. He seemed to have seen his life flash before his eyes, and then he finally decided not to be weak. He told the doctor that he would not be weak, lose hair or throw up, and that he would cycle for an hour after each chemotherapy session.

But, as they say, God gives his strongest troops the toughest fights and he had said on his children’s birthdays that he was happy to have won the battle and to be able to give them the best that he could – health and that Family welfare -Being.

5. Deepika Padukone:

In a TV interview, the stunning beauty not only revealed she suffered from depression, but also set up a mental health foundation – the Live Love Laugh Foundation – to help others who are going through the same experience. She’s one of those actresses who has been very vocal about mental health and has always encouraged people to talk about it. When she was suffering she had initially assumed it was stress, so she tried to distract herself by focusing on work and being around others, which worked for a time, but the nagging feeling persisted. Her breathing was shallow, she had trouble concentrating, and she collapsed frequently.

She claimed that she didn’t want to live anymore and that she didn’t want anyone else to go through what she went through. She previously explained that her condition taught her many things, including patience and most importantly, that there is hope.

6. Honey Singh:

Rapper Yo Yo Honey Singh said he suffered from bipolar disorder and also struggled with alcoholism. It was a particularly bad phase. Many people were jealous of him and wondered how such a small guy could achieve so much. He also told a news agency that there were other problems. He admitted to being an alcoholic and not being able to sleep. He too was overworked. And the situation gradually worsened. It took him four months to realize that something was wrong with him.

After recovering and taking a break from his work for about eighteen months, he spoke about it and explained how it feels, leading to better understanding and less stigma.

Shama Sikandar, who also had a bipolar attack, says it was like coming back from death and feeling like a rebirth after conquering sanity.

7. Karan Johar:

In an interview, popular filmmaker Karan Johar spoke honestly about his battle with depression. He publicly stated that he had many unresolved issues that he needed to address so that others in similar circumstances could get on with their lives. He added that there was a time in his life when he was really depressed and felt like he was going to die. He stated that he suffered from anxiety and as a result had seen a psychologist, which led him to realize that he had to deal with some inner difficulties that had accumulated to the point where they were causing worry.

He said his doctor told him that even if he thinks he has thick skin and that it doesn’t matter, he’s repressing those things inside that occasionally come out. Karan Johar claimed that after that he started talking to others about it and felt better. Karan explained that he feels better since he started communicating with his close friends and family.

8. Rubina Dilaik:

The Bigg Boss 14 winner discussed dealing with anxiety and stress, suicidal thoughts and anger issues in one of the show’s segments. The Shakti actress spoke about it on national television, blaming these factors for their failing relationship. She spoke to her parents about their relationships and explained that they weren’t ideal. She admitted to having anger issues and suicidal thoughts which she blamed for the relationship’s demise, while revealing some heartbreaking incidents from her personal life.

When asked about the stigma surrounding mental health, Rubina explained that she couldn’t figure out what was wrong with her because nobody had really talked about it. She explained that sadness not only makes her feel lonely and irritated, but also questions herself. Rubina went on to say that she had to do some research online to find out what was wrong with her. Things improved for her when she discovered yoga and meditation.
