Downton Abbey is known for its glamorous costumes, so it came as no surprise that last night’s London film premiere was a very elegant affair. At the Leicester Square premiere of Downton Abbey: A New Era, we were treated to some stylish looks on the red carpet, from Michelle Dockery in a shimmering Valentino, to Laura Haddock in a delicate, feathered Miu Miu design, to Claire Danes looking in a top-of-the-line Prada.

The franchise has become one of the most popular period dramas of all time, which Michelle Dockery (who stars as Lady Mary Crawley) attributes to our fascination with the past.

“There’s something calming about the non-technology era and today’s fast life,” she told Harper’s Bazaar UK of why the show is appealing to viewers. “The characters of Downton, although they are from a different time and circumstances, are relatable to most people. Everyone has their favorite Downton character. I love escaping into historical drama and falling into the past.”

Downton Abbey fans can expect the return of other well-loved characters, as well as new faces, in the second film, which will pick up where the last film left off in the late 1920s. Downton Abbey: A New Era will premiere in UK cinemas on April 29, but for now, here’s our pick of the best-dressed stars from last night’s red carpet:
