Catholic Celebrities Kick Off Lent on Social Media Encouraging Prayer & Holiness

On Ash Wednesday, Catholics around the world attend Holy Mass and receive ashes to mark the start of Lent.

Social media is often flooded with posts about Lent before and after Ash Wednesday.

But on Ash Wednesday, many celebrities take the opportunity to express their Catholic faith by posting a photo with ashes.

ChurchPOP reported that Mark Wahlberg and Jonathan Roumie attended Ash Wednesday Mass with Franciscan priest Father Mark-Mary, CFR. They appeared on Fox News and discussed their morning prayer routines.

However, Wahlberg and Roumie weren't the only celebrities to publicly display their ashes on Ash Wednesday.

Catholic celebrities Harrison Butker, Mario Lopez, Patricia Heaton and David Henrie also wished their social media followers a happy and holy Lent on Ash Wednesday.

While announcing a partnership with the Hallow prayer app, Catholic Super Bowl champion Harrison Butker said he “encourages everyone to grow closer to Christ this Lent.”

“Today is Ash Wednesday, the beginning of Lent,” he said. “I had to keep Christ number one by going to mass this morning. As you can see, I got my ashes.”

“I want to encourage everyone to grow closer to Christ’s Lent,” Butker continued. “To mark [Wahlberg] I could say, 'Keep in prayer,' but I say 'Christus Regnat' – 'Christ is King'!”

Actor and television host Mario Lopez posted a photo of himself with a Catholic priest on Instagram.

Lopez's post reads: “'Remember that you are dust, and to dust you shall return…' #AshWednesday #Lent #Catholic.”

Actress Patricia Heaton also published a photo of her ashes.

“The priest has been good to me this year,” Heaton jokes in the caption of her Ash headshot.

Disney actor David Henrie published an Ash Wednesday photo with his wife Maria.

Hernie's post says: “And so it begins: THE LENT!”

The Wizards of Waverly Place star also asked his followers, “What are you focusing on this Lent?!”

The comment received 92 replies.

One user said: “I'm going to try to really change my mindset to be more grateful. The mind is powerful and I think it is easier to get through life when you have a joyful spirit.”

Another user said: “Come closer to mother's pierced heart.”

Someone else added: “Think about it every day and improve yourself, approach prayer, help others.” [and] act in a friendly and solidarity manner in the family environment.”

One user also said, “To grow in love and virtue through the calling God has called me to!”
