Comedian and actor Richard Lewis died of a heart attack at his home in Los Angeles at the age of 76, according to a statement from his publicist.
He made a name for himself as a self-deprecating stand-up, appearing over the years on “The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson,” “Late Night with David Letterman,” “The Daily Show with Jon Stewart,” and in a recurring role as Als After starring in Curb Your Enthusiasm, Lewis admitted in 2023 that he had Parkinson's disease, after which he decided to hang up his microphone and concentrate on acting and writing. Following the announcement of his death, fellow comedians and other celebrities who loved his work and him as a person flooded social media with memories.
“Richard and I were born three days apart in the same hospital and he was like a brother to me for most of my life,” Larry David wrote in a statement Wednesday. “He had that rare combination of being both the funniest person and the sweetest.” But today he made me cry and I will never forgive him for that.
“RIP Richard Lewis. An incredibly funny man who will be missed by everyone. The world needed him now more than ever,” Albert Brooks wrote in a post on X (formerly Twitter).
Even Ringo Starr was touched by Lewis' death and posted a video on his social media expressing his love for his wife Joyce.
“Richard will always be a valued member of the HBO and Curb Your Enthusiasm families. “Our deepest condolences go out to his family, friends and all the fans who counted on Richard to brighten their day with laughter,” HBO said in a statement.
