Sports betting has been around for almost 2000 years, dating back to the Olympic Games in ancient Greece. Recently, sports betting is becoming more and more popular as it is becoming fully legalized. From stories about average people becoming millionaires to stories of celebrities making bold bets and winning big, the world of sports betting has received a lot of attention in recent years. However, it is impossible to discuss the concept of sports betting without showing its other side. It’s also very easy to lose a lot of money and get lost in it without a systematic, data-driven approach.
For most celebrities who have worked hard for their money, things aren’t just random, there has to be some structure and data to rely on, and while there are instances of purely instinctive betting, many big ones rely on it Treat names on professional advisers and sportsbook exactly as they are; an investment.
One of these professional advisors is Mazi VS, a professional sports bettor in Vegas. According to him, “Betting is like any other investment, it needs to be approached methodically. As a sports betting consultant, I’ve found that the people who lose the most are the ones who rely on pure passion and instinct all the time. However, I’ve spent most of the last 6 years studying the art of betting and building one of the highest odds in the game. That’s why people come to me to help them build a portfolio in the industry.” Mazi is the founder of Mazi Picks, a platform that helps people of all financial calibres build a profitable pastime in the sports betting industry.
In 2022, 27 states will have combined $1.5 billion in sports betting revenue. New York, Pennsylvania and Illinois alone brought in over $100 million in revenue. According to an annual poll by the American Gaming Association (AGA), this Sunday alone, a record 50.4 million US adults — representing about 20% of the population — will wager $16 billion on the Super Bowl.

Casey Clark, who joined the AGA in September 2017, told Fox Sports he was shocked at the speed at which sports betting had picked up momentum ahead of the NFL’s annual extravaganza across the country.
“It happened really remarkably quickly,” Clark said. “We should stop and realize how quickly this market has come to life. We had a market in Nevada 4 1/2 years ago. Now we have 33 markets. More than half of American adults can bet from home.”
“Americans have been betting on sports for a very long time. All of this activity took place in the shadows less than five years ago,” Clark said. “You now have the opportunity to bet legally. It’s only in the last five years that we’ve started to break down security in the market.”
In an interview with The Conversation, David Forman, vice president of research at AGA, said that the individual sports bettor is generally viewed as a very different demographic than traditional gamblers that you can find in casinos, saying, “Sports bettors are a different demographic. They are younger, they are more masculine, they also have higher incomes.”
A decade since 50 Cent’s $500,000 winning bet
The iconic rap legend is very open about what he loves to do. He is known for his regular bets on football and hockey, but it was his sensational 2012 NFC Championship bet that earned him the respect of many professional sports bettors. 50 Cent won over a million dollars after betting $500,000 on the Giants to win the NFC.
The rapper had a few other notable wins, including a successful $1.6 million bet on Floyd Mayweather in one of his fights. Ten years on, since his iconic NFC bet, the industry has gotten a bit more complex as sports betting analysts and professional bettors develop empirical methods to make more calculated bets.

However, experts like Mazi believe that no amount of data and analysis can eliminate the instinct of place. “I grew up watching professional sports, primarily football, as a young man and have been a lifelong fan of the game ever since. That probably has a lot to do with why I see the game so clearly and am able to understand it so well. I started betting casually about six years ago, but I knew I really got into something when I turned $50,000 into $300,000 in one month. I just kept winning and my analysis was spot on. I think that’s when I realized I had that certain something.”
Mazi advises many bettors who build impressive portfolios and believes that most people looking to build a profitable side business from betting will benefit from the services of professional bettors to avoid the heavy losses that come with just betting relies on pure passion.
When asked why so many celebrities get involved in sports betting, Mazi replied, “Because it’s just a quicker way to make some extra money if you know what you’re doing. Celebrities tend to have bigger bankrolls than average, so they can afford to win bigger than average on the same bets.”
New York, the famous spot of 50 Cent, introduced mobile sports betting in January 2022. It quickly grew into the largest sports betting ecosystem in the country, raking in nearly $700 million in taxes last year. According to the New York State Gaming Commission, individuals in the state wagered $16.7 billion on mobile apps in New York’s first year of operation.
Floyd Mayweather’s victories and defeats
Floyd Mayweather is perhaps the clearest celebrity picture of the reality of sports betting. The boxing legend ended his career with an impressive unbeaten record of 50-0 and has also built an impressive sports betting resume worthy of his moniker ‘Money’. Over a decade ago, Floyd was vocal about his $45,000 win at Colorado State with a $50,000 bet. This bet was probably the first to closely associate the boxer with real money betting. Since then he’s made some outstanding bets, but also some pretty bad ones.

In 2011, Mayweather bet at least $1 million against Tim Tebow, which didn’t end well for him. Floyd has since mastered his bets and become a bit more methodical in his approach.
In the words of Mazi: “Betting works both ways, which is why as professionals we do our best not to let our customers get lost in the flow. The wins can be addictive and the losses can be devastating. What we do as professionals is find that sweet spot in between where when you lose you don’t lose too much and when you win you make a healthy profit.”

Ideally, professional sports bettors carry out the risk analysis, find a safe investment point and advise their customers accordingly. Ashton Kutcher is a celebrity who has openly admitted to relying on professional advisers for most of his wildly successful bets. The movie star was engaged in sports betting and contributed to the ruin of many bookmakers. He has been known to make reckless bets for his entertainment, but has also won a few. As lucrative as sports betting can be, Mazi discourages people from relying on it as a full-time occupation.
Since the US Supreme Court overturned the ban on sports betting in 2018, 36 states and Washington, DC have legalized it. However, it is not yet operational in three states. Florida, Maine and Nebraska.
The sports betting industry has attracted a lot of bad press over the years due to the stories of addictive and reckless behavior in the industry, but as the industry becomes more data-driven and bookmakers start to set more responsible rules for engagement, the industry will take a turn for the better and increasingly accepted across the board.
