Five Celebrities Who Have Love-Hate Relationships With Social Media

Many celebrities have spoken openly about their struggles with social media — including how they’ve dealt with the ins and outs of constantly updating their feeds.

Mental health is an important issue in today’s society. In 2020, one in five adults in the United States was affected by a mental illness, accounting for nearly 53 million people, according to the National Alliance on Mental Illness.

Here are five celebrities who are open about mental health and how social media has impacted them.

Selena Gomez

Gomez is a big advocate for helping others with mental health as she struggles with her own.

Speaking on social media in a recent interview with Good Morning America, Gomez admitted she hasn’t been online in four years while her team manages her social media accounts. Being without her has had a positive impact on her life.

“It completely changed my life. I’m happier, I’m more present, I connect more with people. It makes me feel normal,” said the Rare Beauty founder.

The pop singer – along with her mother Mandy Teefey and Newsette founder Daniella Pierson – took to the morning show to talk about her new mental health resource website, Wondermind.

“Actually, I’m not at all aware of what’s going on in pop culture, and that makes me really happy,” Gomez told Today in 2021. “And maybe that doesn’t make everyone else happy, but for me, it really has me.” saved life.”

“I find that the more I look at a screen, the more detached I feel from my own body or from what’s happening right in front of me,” Jenner told Vogue’s Open Minded series. She explained that she has an addictive relationship with social media, adding, “Which I don’t like and I’m not proud to say, but I also feel like most of us can probably relate.” , she continued.

In a recent Instagram post, Jenner shared a relaxing video from her home, in which she talked about how this was one of those days when she felt really anxious.

“I love my space and my alone time. I find ways to start my day with a calmer, more positive attitude. Other than that, I just wanted to spread some good vibes,” she told her 229 million Instagram followers.

She made a list of all the things she had done that morning to motivate her for the day.

Madelyn Cline

Cline got her claim to fame through the Netflix original series Outer Banks, which is currently in its third season. Cline will also star in the upcoming Knives Out sequel.

Speaking to Lindsey Carter, host of the Ready, Set, Spill podcast, she spoke candidly about how social media has affected her mentally and emotionally.

The actress said she understands that everyone has their own opinions on a variety of issues, but finds it hard for her to “hear her own thoughts.”

“It’s so important to me what everyone thinks. So sometimes I have to step back and withdraw,” she admitted. “Because of that, juggling social media has been a constant struggle for me.”

Even with the negative aspects of social media, it can also be a positive resource as she loves talking to her fans and seeing what people are saying in their comments.

“But it’s been hard for me to adjust because the reality is it’s not the reality,” she said. “It’s filtered reality.”

Alexandria Ocasio Cortez

In a 2019 interview with Yahoo News podcast Skullduggery, she discussed the potential threats social media can pose to society.

“Social media poses a public health risk for everyone,” she said. “There is an amplified impact for young people, especially children under the age of 3, when they are in front of the screen. But I think it has a lot of implications for older people. I think it affects everyone. Increased isolation, depression, anxiety, addiction, escapism.”

She has left Facebook despite posting her campaign through the social media site.

“Facebook has long been my primary digital organizational tool,” she added.

Still, Ocasio-Cortez said she took steps to limit social media.

She said, “I started making little rules for myself,” she told Yahoo News. “How occasionally you can see me hopping on twitter on the weekends but mostly I take content consumption, when it comes to consumption and reading I take the weekends off. And that’s how I am. I’m not scrolling through trying to read everything online that journalists write over the weekend. I try to do that during the work week. It takes a lot to try to break other habits.

Daisy Ridley

In 2016, the Star Wars actress quit Instagram after “felt pressure” on the social media app.

“I was like, ‘I have to post. Oh my god, it’s been so many days.’ It was actually quite nice not to be there,” she said. “I’m 24. I have a lot of growing up to do. I have a lot of things to take care of personally. To have that projected in front of millions of viewers is like a little extra pressure.”

“I think some people are fine with that. Right now it’s not for me, but who knows.”

5 years later, the actress returned to Instagram: “I emerge from social media hibernation refreshed, recharged and ready for what I call my ‘Year of Yes’.”
