She knew she was different, but Zodwa Wabantu never imagined she would be called to be a sangoma.
They embrace everything about themselves, including their calling.
Celebrities in South Africa have opened up to accepting gifts from their ancestors.
Thabiso Mokhethi learned of his ancestral endowment when he was hitting rock bottom in his life. The actor and TV host has gone through a lot of grief after losing his parents, siblings and marriage.
He opened up with Drum in a previous interview earlier this year, telling us that misfortune had brought his ancestral gift to life, as he wasn’t aware he had it. It was 2020 when everything got intense.
“That was shortly after my divorce, I was single and moved to Bloemfontein and started my life. I lived alone, my calling wanted me to be alone so I could meet different people and have my dreams and visions that will guide me on this path and in the process I have healed.”
He said that with his Christian background, he needed to develop further. It was not an easy decision to accept his ancestral calling.

“I’m still a Christian because accepting my calling doesn’t mean I’m an enemy of God. I’m looking at things from a new perspective now, I’m starting over, but not from scratch. This is my gift from my God and my ancestors, and it has not taken me away from God, it has brought me closer.”

Thabiso has bounced back in his career. He hosts a show called UMdende on Mzansi Wethu where he helps people who are on welfare but have problems with family members.
On the other hand, media personality Zodwa Liram, for her fans Zodwa Wabantu, started the year on a different journey. The dancer and businesswoman has followed her calling as a sangoma.
In a meeting with Drum, she told us she always knew her emotional intelligence and street knowledge held a certain superior power.
“It’s something I can’t say I knew when I was a kid.
“I started having dreams in September last year and they became more serious in December, I knew they weren’t normal. I got dreams and a message to go home and get something from a tree. I dreamed of pearls, something not everyone dreams of, even Sangomas would go to great lengths to get such a direct message. I then consulted with the Sangoma, who I often see for cleanses and consultations, and he put everything in perspective for me.”
Zodwa is aware of the things ancestors can take away from those who refuse the appeal, but she also had her terms.
“They didn’t take anything from me. Sometimes they take cars and houses to show themselves. It’s up to me now to accept and do what I have to do. But I made it very clear to them that I love money and they can’t touch it and they can’t touch the man I’m dating because I love sex,” she adds.
She took her fans on the journey of her ancestors in the new season of her reality TV show about Moja Love, Zodwa Uncensored.
While Andrea Dondolo, who became a household name as Ayanda on SABC 2’s sitcom Stokvel, had to let go of her ego to make the big decision.
The actress opened up about being stubborn about being a sangoma in an Instagram post. She says she only surrendered when she thought about her son and the consequences.
Speaking to City Press, Andrea said she had known about her appeal for years but denied it. She felt the timing just wasn’t right. She says she was only nine years old when her grandmother told her she had a gift.
“I remember the first visiting dream I had when I was nine years old. During the holidays I was visiting my grandparents on their farm. When I told my grandmother about the dream, she said I had a gift. As a child, I experienced a lot of mental attacks because of this.”
The time came and she could no longer deny her gift of being a sangoma.
“It was the most difficult and heartbreaking decision for my ego but the best for my spirit and well being because things were falling apart and knowing what the gift means to the next generation I had to think of my son. I couldn’t burden him with the excess of my rejections. I had to admit my share of the gift.”

“I am a full-fledged sangoma practicing full-time in my hometown for now. Some people didn’t welcome my new journey and rejected me outright. However, there are those who have accepted me beyond my expectations. They actually make me emotional.”
Musician Anatti, whose first name is Anathi Bhongo Mnyango, was tired of talking in riddles about his spiritual gift.
The rapper admitted to Drum that with his new song “Amadlozi,” he’s acknowledging his ancestors and continuing his spiritual journey.
Anatii says he has been on the spiritual journey for a while now. “But I’ve given people hints about it, but without giving too much away.
“I haven’t really revealed details of my gift, but I do have a spiritual calling,” he adds.
When asked if he’s going through the initiation process, he says, “No, not right now.”
