Hilary Swank, Pregnant at 48, Joins Growing List of Celebrities to Conceive Well Into Their 40s

Hilary Swank is 48 and pregnant! The Decorated Actor said Good Morning America on Tuesday that she is expecting twins after years of trying to conceive. “This is something I’ve wanted for a long time and my next thing is to be a mother. And not just one, but two,” she said. “It’s so nice to be able to talk about it and share it.”

Swank hasn’t revealed how many weeks pregnant she is, but confirmed her pregnancy is “advanced enough” that she feels comfortable speaking about it publicly.

I couldn’t be happier for Swank, who has been open about wanting children since 2006. Infertility struggles can be heartbreaking and traumatic, and everyone should be able to become a parent — or not — with all the resources and support they need to thrive. Swank’s story is particularly heartwarming at a time when women are being served egg-freezing ads before they even turn 21 (at least in my humble experience). freezing eggs should be an accessible option for people of all ages looking for it – but there’s an undeniably troubling thing about being hassled about your fertility watch before you can legally drink.

At a time when politicians are doing everything in their power to make pregnancy as dangerous and incapacitating as possible, stories like Swank’s are particularly comforting: They remind us that pregnancy and parenthood are one and the same at any time in life should be joyful decision and not afraid burden by the state.

And Swank is hardly the only person to become pregnant a little later in life — she’s now joining a host of socialites, from Janet Jackson to Sen. Tammy Duckworth (D-Ill.), to steer a pregnancy well into to announce the 40’s.
