Celebrities have reacted with shock, outrage and jubilation when Liz Truss announced her resignation as Prime Minister after just six weeks.
The Prime Minister addressed Downing Street on Thursday afternoon to announce she was stepping down from her role after a disastrous short tenure that included the collapse of the economy and the departure of her Chancellor of the Exchequer and Home Secretary.
In her statement, the outgoing minister said: “Given the situation, I cannot fulfill the mandate for which I was elected by the Conservative Party.”
Piers Morgan tweeted just before her speech: “It’s over. Liz Truss resigns and becomes the shortest-serving Prime Minister in British history. What an absolute shambles.”
The uncensored host then posted an earlier tweet he had written, which read: “Memo to Tories: Out with Truss, drop @RishiSunak PM, keep @Jeremy_Hunt as Chancellor, make @PennyMordaunt Home or Foreign Secretary – and pretend.” ‘like the last 40 catastrophic days had never happened.’
He added today: “This must be done as soon as possible.”

Good Morning Britain presenter Susanna Reid tweeted: “The U-turn Prime Minister. Yesterday: I’m a fighter, not a quitter. Today: gives up.’
Match of the Day host Gary Linker wrote: “Another Prime Minister is stepping down. Would you fucking believe it?’
John Bishop was particularly outraged by the developments, saying: ‘WTF!!! And they think they can just bring in another Tory!!! Unacceptable.”
The announcement sparked Richard Osman, who quipped, “Nobody used to quit until I quit Pointless. Now they are all in. I think I made it cool.’

Love Island narrator Iain Stirling couldn’t resist making a joke about the Prime Minister’s short tenure, quipping: “Liz Truss’s reign as Prime Minister was shorter than a string of Love Island.”
Nish Kumar laughed similarly: “Even Quibi lasted longer than her.”
Sue Perkins chimed in: “Still not sorry. In fact, she laughs. There is no mandate for any of this.’
H from Steps cheered: ‘F*****g GO! Take the hint! #GeneralVelectionNow.’
Love Island star Shaughna Phillips laughed, “No, that’s so embarrassing,” alongside multiple crying emojis.
Joel Lycett continued the jokes, tweeting: “@trussliz omg just heard there is a leadership election next week????? You should run babe, you would be perfect!!!’
Black Mirror creator Charlie Brooker added: “This damn government is like malware you can’t remove. General Elections NOW.’
