Trace Cyrus should let the girls talk to the girls.
Cyrus, former guitarist for pop-rock band Metro Station and brother of pop star Miley Cyrus, sparked backlash on social media when he published a Wednesday post on X, formerly known as Twitter, criticizing women who post sexual content on the online Create platform OnlyFans.
OnlyFans is a social media network like Instagram, YouTube and Facebook where YouTubers can make money from users – the “fans” – who pay a monthly membership fee to access their exclusive content. The platform has become synonymous with the adult entertainment industry and sexual content.
While Cyrus said he knows “some amazing girls” who are OnlyFans creators, many of those women have “lost their chance of ever settling with a good guy with morals.”
“They get a lot of attention from the guys on (OnlyFans) so they think they have options,” Cyrus wrote. “But any man so desperate to watch sexual content that he’s willing to pay for it is a desperate loser. … They do not look to these women and do not equate their worth as future wives, mothers or faithful partners.”
Cyrus also seemed to be keen on the autonomy that female users find in monetizing their content via OnlyFans.
“I just think this independent mindset of not needing a man is extremely toxic and leads to a very lonely future,” Cyrus wrote. “Having a good husband and family will bring you happier in old age than (OnlyFans) ever could.”
Social media users were quick to respond to Cyrus for his comments.
“Really curious: why do you care?” User @ladidaix wrote on X: “Live and let live. No need to project.”
“There are many married sex workers with families, businesses, education, homes, etc. Some are married to sex workers, some are married to non-sex workers,” wrote X-user @SybilStalloneTV. “We are valuable people. Stop belittling our existence with your platform.”
X user @WWKaye sarcastically wrote: “We need to stop this ridiculous notion that women can treat their bodies and time as theirs! What a crazy idea for women to do what they like and enjoy of their own choosing!” “
In an X post on Thursday, Cyrus doubled down on his initial criticism. “Most of you have made it clear that you are not intelligent enough to refute my testimony without insults and abuse,” he wrote.
A number of celebrities, including Cardi B, Carmen Electra, Bella Thorne, Drea de Matteo, and Iggy Azalea, have embraced the subscription-based platform in recent years because it gives them autonomy over their sexuality and creative lives.
“I’ve made so much money out of my body for a lot of people, and I’ve gotten the smallest share of my own … body, my own work, and my own ideas,” Azalea Emily Ratajkowski said in a February interview. “I don’t think I need to be sorry for wanting to commodify my own (things).”
Electra, who launched her OnlyFans profile in May 2022, said the platform has given her the “opportunity to be my own boss and have my own creative vision that I can share with my fans without anyone being above me .”
“People will do whatever they want with your photos anyway,” Electra told People magazine at the time. “You might as well be in control of them and follow what you feel like inside.”
Thorne quickly capitalized on the platform, becoming the first OnlyFans creator to make $1 million in less than 24 hours, according to Paper Magazine.
“OnlyFans is the first platform where I can have total control over my image: without censorship, without judgement, and without being bullied online for being me,” Thorne told the outlet in August 2020.
