Motherwell target Taylor Swift and A-list Hollywood celebrities with tongue-in-cheek appeal for investors
Motherwell has targeted Taylor Swift and Hollywood stars with a new campaign aimed at boosting investment for the Fir Park squad.
The Premiership club is looking for funding to take it forward on and off the pitch and secure the club's long-term future.
Motherwell is fan-owned through the Well Society and while they make it clear that the club is not for sale, they are looking for new investment, more members to sign up and companies or individuals who share their values and this can put money into it.
The campaign was launched with a video tapping into the trend of North American celebrities investing in British football following Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney's purchase of Wrexham and Tom Brady's involvement in the takeover of Birmingham City.
The short film begins with first-team star Stephen O'Donnell telling the Hollywood elite that he has “a club that offers real value for money” and explains how financial backing goes beyond would help the team, but also support the club in its work for the local community.
The video highlights the walking football and para-football programs, support groups and children's clubs that Motherwell runs, as well as placing emphasis on community initiatives that address issues such as men's mental health. The aim of the video is to show that financial support is about more than just sport.
As defender Dan Casey says: “Today we may not beat Real Madrid, but you will see us defeat unemployment, inequality and loneliness.”
The light-hearted film, which also stars players Bevis Mugabi, Liam Kelly, Blair Spittal, Bailley Collins, Emily Mutch and assistant coach Leanne Crichton, lures investors with the promise of a star in the stadium, with models for “Well, B” , “Well.I.Am.” and “MotherWell Ferrell.”
The playful focus on A-list money is at the forefront, but a disclaimer makes it clear that the club would welcome support of any size from around the world.
It said: “Disclaimer: Of course a Hollywood star with white teeth and deep pockets would be great, but we welcome anyone who simply wants to support, sponsor or invest in a proper football club that supports the local community.”
“We are proud to be a fan club, but we are always looking for ways to do more and achieve bigger things,” said chairman Jim McMahon. “This is a somewhat unconventional approach, but we hope it will allow us to increase the number of Well Society members or find companies or individuals whose values align with ours.
“Most football clubs operate at a loss and are only able to survive through significant annual subsidies from their owners.
“At the moment there is a lot of talk about famous investors from the USA. So we thought it would be fun to put our own twist on the theme and show what Motherwell Football Club is all about.
“Hopefully you can see that we are a club that goes beyond the 90 minutes. With things like walking football and our mental health support, we have always helped the local community to ensure the positive impact of football is felt off the pitch too.
“We welcome anyone who wants to support a proper community club. Whether new additions to the Well Society or new sponsors. And if anyone from Hollywood wants to get involved, we’re all ears.”
Or, as one young supporter put it at the end of the video: “Taylor Swift, give a treat!”
