Nepotism Babies — also known as “Nepo Babies” — are the privileged offspring of wealthy celebrities or industry insiders who have attained a measure of fame or success thanks to their family connections.

The concept of celebrity kids standing up is nothing new, but the nickname officially entered pop culture last year when New York Magazine declared 2022 the “Year of the Nepo Baby.”

Whether it’s in front of the camera (Lily-Rose Depp, Drew Barrymore, Dakota Johnson), on the catwalk (Kendall Jenner, Kaia Gerber, Lila Moss) or sold out concert halls (Miley Cyrus, Willow Smith, Steve Aoki), or building a business empire (Kim Kardashian, Kylie Jenner, Gwyneth Paltrow), Nepo babies are no strangers to the idea of finding huge success thanks to their famous family members.

It’s no surprise, then, that this lucky group has also made big strides in real estate, with each of them buying and selling some of the most notable properties imaginable.

Here’s a look at the notable properties of some of the most well-known Nepo babies.

Miley Cyrus

Cyrus, 30, is an accomplished singer, songwriter and actor whose work spans pop, country, rock and hip-hop.

She rose to fame as a teen idol in Disney’s Hannah Montana — and she also happens to be the third daughter of country music superstar Billy Ray Cyrus.

Their homes, like their careers, are large and eclectic. Her most recent real estate activity was selling her Tennessee mansion for a whopping US$14.5 million (AUD21.1 million).

That’s almost triple the $5.8 million the “Wrecking Ball” singer paid five years ago for the ranch adjacent to Nashville.

The five bedroom, six bathroom farmhouse spreads over 650m². The property features a pool, horse stables and 33 acres of open space.

It’s not Cyrus’ only real estate investment, however. In 2020, she bought a remodeled home in Hidden Hills, California for less than $5 million.

She also had a home in Malibu (which she shared with her ex-husband, Liam Hemsworth) and a Studio City, California, mid-century modern residence with a pool and cabana, which she picked up for $3.9 million.

KylieJenner

Jenner, 25, became a serial entrepreneur at age 14, working on a clothing line for PacSun with her sister, Kendall Jenner.

Since then she has launched other clothing and makeup lines and was named the youngest self-made billionaire by Forbes at the age of 21.

Jenner is the daughter of Kris and Caitlyn Jenner and has starred in reality shows about her family since 2007, challenging the “homemade.”

Jenner also invests heavily in real estate. In 2022, she and partner Travis Scott listed their 9,000-square-foot, six-bedroom, nine-bathroom Beverly Hills mansion for $22 million.

They bought it four years ago for $13.4 million. Amenities include a home theater, library, exercise room, wet bar and a massive 213 sq m master suite with balcony.

Jenner’s other possessions include a $36.5 million mansion in the Holmby Hills neighborhood of Los Angeles and a vacation home in Palm Springs.

She also contributes to the Kardashian-Jenner connection that is taking shape in Hidden Hills. Jenner has invested $15 million on a property between her mother’s $20 million home and sister Khloe Kardashian’s $17 million mansion.

LiliCollins

Collins is best known for two things: her starring role as Emily Cooper on the Netflix hit series Emily in Paris, and being the daughter of legendary musician Phil Collins.

The 33-year-old actor and model, who is married to Charlie McDowell, son of actors Malcolm McDowell and Mary Steenburgen, began acting in 2007, having small roles on TV shows like ‘90210’, then larger roles in films like “The Blind Side” and “Mirror, Mirror”.

Collins recently acquired a $3.9 million (AU$5.7 million) mid-century treasure from Saturday Night Live alumnus Kristen Wiig.

The home was built in 1947 by the father and son team of Kemper Nomland Sr. and Kemper Nomland Jr.

It is considered a classic example of mid-century modernism. The 318 sqm home has an open floor plan, floor to ceiling glass walls, four bedrooms and four bathrooms.

This purchase came after the sale of her Beverly Hills home in 2021 for $13.5 million, which she bought in 2016 for $12.5 million.

Nicole Richie

The world first met Richie when she starred with Paris Hilton on the reality show The Simple Life. Since then, the 41-year-old TV personality, fashion designer and socialite has been part of the pop culture landscape.

Her biological father is musician Peter Michael Escovedo, but she was adopted by superstar Lionel Richie, who was a friend of Escovedo, and her biological mother, Karen Moss.

Richie shares her stunning estate with her husband, Good Charlotte musician Joel Madden.

The couple bought their 576-sqm Beverly Hills mansion for US$10.2 million (AUD14.9 million) in 2021.

Before they bought it, the home was featured in Architectural Digest after being renovated by Simo Design. It offers both style and substance – with the plus of security in a gated community.

The floor plan includes a library, pool, spa, five bedrooms and seven bathrooms. Thoughtful details include intricate millwork, wide oak plank floors, and whitewashed walls.

Johnson made her screen debut at age 10 opposite her mother, Melanie Griffith, in Crazy in Alabama.

She’s since become a huge star in her own right, appearing in the Fifty Shades of Gray franchise, Suspiria, Bad Times at the El Royale, The Lost Daughter, and more.

The 33-year-old is also the daughter of Don Johnson, and her partner is Coldplay rocker Chris Martin.

Her estate is a slight detour from the glittery spreads favored by most Nepo babies, despite being featured in Architectural Digest in 2020. In the interview, she describes the house — which she bought for $3.5 million in 2016 — as like a tree house on a boat.

Located in a sleepy LA neighborhood, this mid-century modern home was designed by modernist Carl Maston.

It features a lap pool, floor-to-ceiling windows, concrete floors, brass and glass fixtures, wood paneling, and eclectic interior design.
