You are stoic. You are mysterious. They are light on their feet. They’re smart as a whip, and sometimes they’re cuddly and super cute.
But some cats are a paw superior to the others. Some of our feline friends aren’t just known for walking slowly across keyboards and scratching furniture.
Some cats hold world records. Sure, some of them just scowled to get them, but they’ll take the title anyway.
In honor of International Cat Day, let’s take a look at cats that made it into the Guinness World Records Book.

Most likes for a cat on Facebook
Grumpy Cat, also known as Tardar Sauce, was the most popular cat on Facebook with 8,759,819 likes on May 3, 2017. The cat went viral in 2012 after a photo and video surfaced the internet.
Before she passed away in May 2019 at the age of seven, she lived with her owner, Tabatha Bundesen, in Morristown, Arizona. She has had several television appearances, including a 2013 documentary called Lil Bub & Friendz, and had her own TV movie called Grumpy Cat’s Worst Christmas Ever in 2014, according to Guinness World Records.
When she died, she “passed peacefully asleep in her mother’s arms,” according to a social media post from her owners.
Most followers on Instagram for a cat
Next is Nala, a cat who has the most followers on Instagram as of May 13, 2020. Nala’s @nala_cat account has 4.5 million followers as of International Cat Day 2022.
The Siamese/Tabby mix was adopted from a shelter by her owner, Varisiri Methachittiphan. According to the Guinness World Records website, she often wears cute headgear and loves to curl up in boxes.
Most viewed cat video on YouTube
And then there’s “A Very Angry Cat”, which was uploaded to YouTube on October 6, 2006 and was viewed 88,810,910 times on October 18, 2016, making it the most viewed YouTube video featuring a cat (excluding compilations).
In the video, a cat screeches and hisses at the camera with its ears laid back. We really hope this kitten’s mood has improved since then!
Most subscribers for an animated animal on YouTube
There’s also a record for the most subscribed animated animal on YouTube, broken by Simon’s Cat. As of August 8, 2022, the cat has 5.8 million subscribers.
He made his first appearance in an online video titled “Cat Man Do” – an animation created by British artist Simon Tofield, according to online records.
Simon’s Cat is the second most subscribed animal channel on YouTube after National Geographic.
The longest jump of a cat
And what about cats, known for their incredible agility?
Introducing Waffle the Warrior Cat, a 10-year-old cat who jumped 213.36 centimeters, or seven feet, on January 30, 2018, setting a Guinness World Record.
Most tricks a cat can do in one minute
Let’s talk tricks, shall we?
The record for most tricks by a cat in one minute is 26, broken by the cat Alexis from Bruck an der Leitha, Lower Austria, Austria on June 10, 2020.
Her owner, Anika Moritz, started training her a few weeks after her return home. According to online records, Alexis is “trustworthy, loves to cuddle, but also values her freedom.”
The loudest purr of a domestic cat
Next is Merlin, a cat owned by UK resident Tracy Westwood.
Merlin set the record for the loudest purr by a domestic cat on April 2, 2015, purring at 67.8 db(A), according to Guinness, as loud as a revving motorcycle.

Longest living domestic cat
Cats don’t just set world records when it comes to being loud or jumping long distances. Sometimes they are declared winners simply because of their size.
Take Barivel for example. The Maine Coon measures 120 centimeters. or 3 feet and 11.2 inches, setting the record for longest living domestic cat.
He lives in Vigevano, Pavia, Italy and is described as a quiet, shy tomcat.
“He has his own Instagram profile and gets a lot of comments asking about his height,” reads his Guinness World Records page.
He loves to eat fish (especially tuna) and of course chicken. His name means clown or funny, the website said.
Oldest living cat siblings
Next are two cat siblings who lived 44 years together on March 1, 2022.
Pika and Zippo were born on March 1st, 2000 in the UK. The twins are black and white house cats who have lived with the Teece family all their lives.
The longest surviving Janus cat of all time
At the bottom of our list is the longest surviving Janus cat named Frank and Louie. The Massachusetts cat had two faces.
He was adopted by his owner Marty on September 8, 1999 at one day old after being born very early that morning according to online records.
He lived 15 years and 87 days until he died of cancer on December 4, 2014.
