If you turn to your favorite Netflix show for baby name inspiration, or if a football hero envisions you kicking a ball of your own Lionel or Lionela one day, you’re not alone.
Netflix and celebrities are among the big hitters in predicting popular baby names in 2023.
The influence of pop culture on our children’s names is nothing new. Isabella is still in New Zealand’s top 20 long after we were all obsessed with Twilight.
Celebrity is also not automatic. The arrival of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s little girl in 2021 didn’t prompt a wave of Kiwi Lilibets.

But in 2023, TV could spur an influx of Baby Wednesdays, Daisys (from upcoming Amazon Prime series Daisy Jones and the Six) and in a Royal/Netflix crossover, Harry and Meghans, according to a recent international naming report of the US company Preply.
Shows like Bridgerton, Sex Education and Peaky Blinders have already seen names like Maeve, Otis, Arthur, Tommy and Finn rise in popularity.
If your favorite TV character is Penelope from Bridgerton, Georgia from Ginny and Georgia, Leia from That ’90s Show, or Charlotte from Queen Charlotte: a Bridgerton Story, you’re in good company. They all have the tip to influence baby names in the coming year.
Although Charlotte has a bit of a cheating mood, as she consistently ranks high in New Zealand – and sits comfortably third in 2022.

TV not your thing? Celebrities are generally big winners. According to the report, Lionel and Lionela rose 700% in the US province of Santa Fe – no doubt inspired by the football legend’s successful FIFA campaign in 2022.

The yet-to-be-announced name of Khloe Kardashian’s newest baby and Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds is expected to set a trend, though no baby has been announced — let alone a name.

Some names like Penelope, Daisy, Harry and Tommy proved popular with Kiwi newborns in 2022, but celebrity babies and TV fads still have a long way to go if they hope to oust Isla or Oliver from the top.
