Unfortunately, in 2023, several well-known personalities broke up with their partners, and some of them were Canadian stars.

From reality stars to actors and musicians, here are nine Canadian celebrities who have gone through breakups in 2023.

Kaitlyn Bristowe and Jason Tartick

Former Bachelorette star Kaitlyn Bristowe surprised fans when she announced her split from fiancé Jason Tartick in August.

Both Bristowe and Tartick are former members of The Bachelor franchise, although they did not meet on the show.

According to a report from Today, they met in 2018 when Bristowe was recording her podcast in Seattle.

The couple began dating in 2019 when Tartick publicly asked Bristowe out during an episode of her podcast “Off the Vine” with Kaitlyn Bristowe, according to People.

The couple got engaged in 2021 and sounded very much in love as they discussed the wedding and having children.

It came as a shock to many when the couple announced the end of their four-year relationship with a joint Instagram post on August 6th.

“It is heartbreaking and sad to say goodbye, but our care and admiration for each other will never die,” the post reads.

The duo both attended former Bachelor host Chris Harrison's wedding in November, so it looks like they're still on good terms!

Shawn Mendes and Camila Cabello

Many fans were excited when Shawn Mendes and Camila Cabello gave their relationship a second chance in 2023.

The couple began dating in 2019 and announced in November 2021 that they were separating after two years.

The duo then sparked romance rumors again after they were spotted kissing at Coachella in April 2023.

Their second chance was short-lived and in June a source told Entertainment Tonight that Mendes and Cabello were over again.

“They tried, but ultimately the timing is not right for either of them. They're both staying busy and doing their own things,” the source told ET.

Avril Lavigne and Mod Sun

Avril Lavigne and American singer Mod Sun began dating in early 2021 after meeting during a studio writing session, according to a report by People.

The two got engaged in March 2022 in Paris during a romantic boat trip on the Seine.

According to People, the couple split less than a year later, in February 2023, after being separated on and off for several months.

Avril Lavigne and Tyga

Lavigne's split from Mod Sun wasn't the only one for the “Complicated” singer in 2023.

Shortly after her engagement to Mod Sun ended, Lavigne was spotted having dinner with rapper Tyga.

Fans of the couple were thrilled when Tyga shared some pictures of him and Lavigne together in an Instagram post on March 7, and the “Sk8er Boi” singer commented with a few black heart emojis.

According to People, the couple dated for almost four months before ending their relationship.

Although they were briefly seen together again after breaking up at a Fourth of July party, the entertainment network reported in October that the couple had split for good.

Joshua Jackson and Jodie Turner Smith

According to Elle, Canadian actor Joshua Jackson is currently in the midst of a separation after his wife Jodie Turner-Smith filed for divorce on October 2nd.

It appears the divorce was one-sided, as the outlet reports that the Dawson's Creek actor was “blindsided” by the move and he didn't know Turner-Smith was so “unhappy.”

The couple has been married since August 19, 2019 and had daughter June Rose Diana Jackson in April 2020.

Justin Trudeau and Sophie Grégoire Trudeau

One of Canada's biggest celebrity breakups occurred on August 2, when Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and his wife Sophie Grégoire Trudeau announced their separation after 18 years of marriage.

“Hello everyone, Sophie and I would like to inform you that after many meaningful and difficult conversations, we have made the decision to separate,” the two wrote in a joint Instagram post.

Speculation about trouble between the couple has been circulating for some time, particularly after Sophie wrote of “severe storms” in 2022.

The couple was married since May 28, 2005 and has three children together: Xavier, Ella-Grace and Hadrien.

Antoni Porowski and Kevin Harrington

Queer Eye's Antoni Porowski and his partner Kevin Harrington ended their year-long engagement in November.

The couple dated for three years before getting engaged.

According to People, Porowski and Harrington split after realizing they were taking “different paths” when discussing the future and their split was amicable.

Eric McCormack and Janet Holden

After 26 years of marriage, Eric McCormack's wife Janet Holden filed for divorce from the Will & Grace actor on November 22.

It's unclear what happened between the couple, and Page Six reports Holden cited “irreconcilable differences” in her divorce filing.

The couple tied the knot in 1997 after meeting on the set of the 1994 TV miniseries Lonesome Dove.

They are parents to a 21-year-old son named Finnigan.

Victor Webster and Shantel VanSanten

According to a report from People, Canadian actor Victor Webster filed for divorce from his wife of almost two years, Shantel VanSanten, in early January.

The couple dated for four years after meeting on the set of the Hallmark film Love Blossoms in 2017.

Webster proposed to the One Tree Hill actress in February 2020 and they celebrated three weddings in 2021.

Dean McDermott and Tori Spelling

Canadian actor Dean McDermott and his wife Beverly Hills, 90210 actress Tori Spelling announced their separation in June 2023 after 18 years of marriage.

According to People, the couple met in 2005 while filming a movie together in Ottawa. They were both married to other people at the time.

The couple married in Fiji in 2006 and had four children before McDermott admitted cheating on his wife.

The couple worked on their relationship and had a fifth child, a son, in 2017.

In an interview with the Daily Mail, McDermott revealed that his substance abuse issues had an impact on his marriage to the actress. He told the outlet that he and his wife lived like “roommates” for years before the split.
