(Video) 10 Awkward, Rude, & Controversial Moments Between Fans & Celebrities

Fan encounters or celebrity interactions are not always pleasant. There may be uncomfortable or embarrassing reactions. It’s easy to get excited and nervous when meeting your idol in person. After all, it’s usually a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity and fans want to make the most of it.

However, some people might forget that celebrities are people too. They are not objects. We’ve seen many occasions where fans have crossed the line when it comes to celebrity interactions. Here are just 10 examples from the last few years.

Tom Holland, Anthony Mackie and Sebastian Stan deal with venomous ACE Comic-Con fans

ACE Comic-Con was an event in Seattle, Washington featuring Anthony Mackie, Sebastian Stan and Tom Holland. The three MCU actors sat together on a panel discussion on day two of the comic convention when it came time for a question-and-answer session with fans. Before that, there was a casual banter between the three actors.

However, the question-and-answer session was fraught with toxicity as fans were rude to the Marvel stars. The most notorious part was that Anthony Mackie was constantly being eclipsed by Dutch fangirls and their favoritism towards the British actor. Luckily, the Falcon star responded with great comebacks to shut her up.

Will Smith punches a Ukrainian reporter who kisses him

Men In Black actor Will Smith wasn’t thrilled at the Moscow premiere of the third installment in the series. The star had an awkward exchange with a reporter who allegedly tried to kiss him on the lips while Smith walked the red carpet. Controversial Ukrainian reporter Vitalii Sediuk was known for performing pranks or stunts on celebrities. He explained he was Smith’s biggest fan and wanted a hug, but then pulled the actor’s face towards him to kiss him.

Smith angrily said, “C’mon man, what the heck is your problem, mate?” The actor said this while lightly slapping Serdiuk in the face and then moving on elsewhere. Smith also mentioned to journalists and his fans that Serdiuk was lucky he wasn’t hit by the actor. He then angrily declared, “Oh, I said that on camera! Everything is good”.

Yerin from GFRIEND catches someone with a hidden camera

YouTube video

On March 31, 2017, GFRIEND (여자친구) held a fan signature event in Seoul, South Korea and witnessed a spooky incident involving a fan. The girls were clearly in a good mood. But then some of the girls spotted a fan wearing glasses with a tiny hidden camera installed on it.

One of the members, Yuju (유주), first noticed it, but then ignored it and possibly told Sowon (소원) and SinB (신비) about it. But Yerin (예린) took the next step and asked the fan to take off his glasses to examine them. The Korean idol noticed a small camera on the glasses, which made her uncomfortable. When the fan left, she informed the manager that the fan secretly filmed her. This incident was very controversial as spy cameras were widespread in South Korea and men secretly filmed women without their consent.

Miley Cyrus is dealing with pushy fans in Costa Rica

YouTube video

A video was shot on a TV station in Costa Rica showing Miley Cyrus being asked by fans for a photo and autograph by the American artist. This all happened while Cyrus was heading to a helicopter during a vacation with Liam Hemsworth. She obviously wanted privacy when someone called her an “asshole.” The celebrity then turned and replied, “What the heck?” Are you serious?”

Cyrus then tweeted about the whole incident, explaining, “I was trying not to tweet and just enjoy the holidays but just to get something straight, I would NEVER swear to a fan.” If someone yells something so rude I pretend “For the fans I love taking pictures with looking like an ‘asshole,’ I cannot tolerate that kind of rudeness.” The former Disney star has had several run-ins with paparazzi in the past, but this was certainly one of her most memorable and most violent setbacks against misbehaving fans.

Adele asks a fan to stop filming her during a live show

YouTube video

Adele certainly has strict guidelines for fans attending her concert. The British singer clearly wished she wasn’t recorded singing on stage and instead had everyone watching. And no, not with your camera lens, but with your eyes.

In 2016, the 32-year-old artist featured in a video in which she singled out a woman at a concert. She asked her fan: “Could you stop filming me with this video camera? Because I’m really here in real life, you can enjoy it in real life instead of through your camera.” She continued, “This isn’t a DVD, this is a real show.” Honestly, it seems like a waste of time recording while of a live performance and Adele clearly shares the same opinion.

SEVENTEEN and the rude fangirl

YouTube video

In 2015, a video circulated showing a very rude fan throwing a tantrum with the K-pop group SEVENTEEN (세븐틴). The fan in question appears to be a girl in a pink coat who hurls albums at members before leaving as a staff member goes to see what happened.

It’s sad to see how shocked the members were at the look on her face. They don’t know why it happened, nor do they know how to deal with the situation. Some people have allegedly pointed out that the girl took an album from Seungkwan (승관) and threw it at Joshua (승관), saying she was “done with him”. Looks like she’s having a falling out with the American-Korean K-pop idol. To this day we don’t know why.

Justin Bieber is nearly hit by a thrown water bottle

Popular Canadian singer Justin Bieber performed at Summerburst Festival in Stockholm, Sweden in 2017. A water bottle was once thrown at the 26-year-old singer after he told the audience that he refused to sing Despacito.

Luckily, he dodged the flying bottle, which almost hit him in the head. The Canadian heartthrob told his audience, “I can’t do Despacito, I don’t even know.” Bieber was visibly calm about the situation and begged his audience not to throw objects at him.

Rami Malek insults one of his fans

YouTube video

“Bohemian Rhapsody” star Rami Malek wasn’t dealing with any of his fans. The fan, named Xan Black, wanted to take a selfie with Malek but then asked the actor to call her friend, which he declined. It was indeed a terrifying moment, not only for the fan but for everyone else who witnessed the situation.

Fans were quick enough to criticize the Freddie Mercury actor for being selfish, but Malek clearly doesn’t care. He made it clear that he was perfectly fine with getting in touch with fans but wished them to be clear about what they wanted. Malek explained, “I just want to know what people are doing right now. When someone automatically films you, it’s a bit pushy.”

Jackson Wang kneels and begs fans to leave him alone

YouTube video

It was a very difficult moment for GOT7 (갓세븐)’s Jackson Wang (왕잭슨) when the K-pop idol was mobbed by fans at Beijing International Airport. He had to kneel down and beg his fans to leave him alone.

Sasaengs are obviously not just a Korean thing, they also occur internationally. Jackson attracted a great deal of attention worldwide at the time. An incident like this had to happen eventually, even though most of us wish it didn’t. For the love of God, give these idols their personal space.

Tzuyu was insulted by rude fans at a fan meetup and asked to shut up

YouTube video

During a fan signature event in 2017, female K-pop group TWICE (트와이스) bid their fans farewell. However, when it was Tzuyu (쯔위) (子瑜)’s turn to speak, fans shouted at the Taiwanese idol, “Just don’t say it!” One of them even asked Tzuyu to hold her mouth and shut it.

Out of embarrassment, she then asked Jeongyeon (정연) to speak instead. Netizens were furious with the fan for making an unnecessary and rude remark towards the idol. The fan then apologized and admitted his wrongdoing. Apparently he blurted out that word just because the fan show was ending and he didn’t want to say goodbye to the idols. Maybe a superficial apology, but at least he wasn’t silent about it.
