On Oscar night, most people celebrate not only the winners but also the fashion worn by celebrities. And if you have a keen eye, you might have spotted several of them with a red pin. This pin, which also features the black outline of an orange hand holding a heart, is part of the Artists4Ceasefire initiative.
Created by a collective of artists and advocates, Artists4Ceasefire uses the platforms of musicians, actors and other creatives to call for a ceasefire in the conflict between Palestine and Israel. In October 2023, the organization sent an open letter to President Biden calling on him and members of the US Congress to call for de-escalation and ceasefires in Gaza and Israel.
According to news sources, more than 400 artists have joined the initiative, including Billie Eilish, Mark Ruffalo, Ben Affleck, Jennifer Lopez, Ava DuVernay and America Ferrara.
The pin was designed to illustrate the organization's motto that people must lead with love. According to their website: “The orange hand symbolizes the wonderful community of people from diverse backgrounds who have come together to center our common humanity.” The heart held in the center of the hand is an invitation to us “To always lead with our hearts and with love.”

Actor Ramy Youssef, who stars in “Poor Things,” discussed the pin's meaning with The Hollywood Reporter on the red carpet.
“We have so many artists here tonight wearing it,” Youssef shared. “We all call for an immediate and lasting ceasefire in Gaza. We demand the safety of everyone involved.”
This isn't the first time celebrities have adorned the Artists4Ceasefire pin for an important event. Members of Boygenius wore the pins at the Grammys in February, a night where they won four awards. Singer Annie Lennox also mentioned Artists4Ceasefire at the end of her moving tribute to Sinéad O'Connor.
