Why These Celebrities Say No To Drinking

There are a few things a celebrity can guarantee: fame, fortune, and — most importantly — pressure. It’s no secret that celebrities deal with incredible pressures that they’re used to downplaying in order to appear good to the millions of fans invested in their lives. That’s why what lurks behind the curtain of their lives can sometimes be surprising relative to people who lead fairly normal lives.

The truth is, even celebrities fight. Hollywood isn’t for the faint of heart, and many celebrities like Demi Lovato have struggled with substance abuse as a result. It shouldn’t come as a surprise, then, that some celebrities are vowing to stay away from substances that could endanger their careers — and ultimately their lives. Here’s a look at a few celebrities that fans might not know have quit alcohol.

Rapper Kendrick Lamar has been vocal in his support of abstaining from alcohol, despite his lyrics containing references to substance use. Speaking on The Arsenio Hall Show about why he abstains from drugs, Lamar explained that because his parents were so young, he grew up substance abuse and chose not to indulge in it.

7 Kathy Griffin

Comedian Kathy Griffin has never had a drink in her life — at least not by choice. Griffin revealed in a 2012 interview with Marlo Thomas that she gave up alcohol when she was 10 and her father gave her some of his beer to keep her from choking on a piece of food. Griffin said the beer made her nose sting, and in an interview with Healthy Living Magazine, she said she was raised in an Irish Catholic family who drank quite a bit.

“I was just looking around and thought they already did that for me,” Griffin said.

British DJ Calvin Harris struggled with alcohol at work and confessed to drinking two bottles of Jack Daniels the night before giving up alcohol. The drinking eventually began to affect his work.

“My live shows are a million times better now. When you’re drinking, you can’t even remember if it’s a good show or not — and that’s probably for the best, because it would have been rubbish because I was drunk and had no sense,” Harris said. (via Yahoo )

Actress Kristen Davis knew it was time to give up alcohol when it stood between her and her dreams. The Sex and the City actress struggled with insecurities growing up after her parents divorced and began drinking as a teenager. Things changed when the actress started showing up to her acting classes hungover, and she ended up having to choose between substance and the career she desperately wanted to pursue.

“I figured it would be one or the other. I can’t really have both.” Davis recalled.

Actress Jada Pinkett Smith has been sober for over 20 years. Smith’s own mother has been sober longer than her after battling a heroin addiction. The actress revealed on her talk show Red Table Talk that she drank red wine as if it were water and that her addiction also expanded into ecstasy, leading to her passing out on the set of the 1996 comedy The Nutty Professor.

“As I went to get the third bottle of wine, I said, ‘You’ve got a problem,’ and that day it was cold turkey,” she said. “That day I just quit.”

In her 2020 memoir Open Book, Simpson recounts how she got so drunk she couldn’t even get her kids ready for a Halloween party. Actress Anne Hathaway is sober — but not for the reasons most people would think. The actress opened up in an interview with Boston Common Magazine that her (tentative) decision to quit drinking was ultimately made when she became a parent.

“I didn’t put out (a drink) because my drinking was a problem; I put it away because the way I drink causes me to have hangovers and that was the problem,” Hathaway said. “My last hangover lasted five days. If I’m at a point in my life where I have enough room to have a hangover, I’ll start drinking again, but it won’t be until my kid is out of the house.”

“What I have found is structure. This has led me to a balance of opposites.
