3air: Providing internet access and blockchain opportunities to underserved African countries

According to the World Bank, less than a third of Africa’s population has access to broadband internet. While people around the world are more connected than ever before, millions of Africans remain without adequate internet connectivity – hindering their access to life-changing opportunities around the world. The Covid-19 pandemic has also accelerated our collective dependence on the internet, as millions are now learning and working remotely and need constant personal internet access to function effectively.

The lack of adequate Internet infrastructure not only exacerbates underdevelopment in third world countries, it also has a devastating impact on education. Young students who do not have Internet access are typically left behind and are often unable to perform satisfactorily.

The same can be said for the well-being of communities as the Internet expands communication channels and provides access to health care, financial services, entertainment and basic goods that may otherwise not be available.

3air aims to solve this problem by providing affordable high-speed broadband to cities in sub-Saharan Africa while enabling users to thrive on the Web3 through education, infrastructure and skills development.

What is 3Air?

3air is a blockchain-based startup aiming to provide broadband internet connections and multiple digital services to African communities. It uses proprietary technology to build broadband infrastructure, connecting billions to the internet and the 3air platform.

Using technology from one of its partners, K3 Last Mile, 3air will be able to deliver fast and affordable Internet access, digital television and IP telephony services wirelessly over the air. Thoroughly tested and improved over the past decade, this technology works even in the harsh weather conditions of Sierra Leone.

How does it work?

First, users are provided with high-speed Internet access. Users purchase access to the 3air broadband Internet network by purchasing an NFT with their subscription service of choice. Subscriptions can be sold and transferred to different wallets, allowing users to easily transfer their connectivity between friends and family, or simply from one device to another. Once you are a user on the platform, you can create your own digital identity to identify yourself online, create custodial and non-custodial wallets and access financial services.

Users will also be empowered to generate an income, become part of the global economy and even lift themselves out of poverty through multiple income-generating mechanisms on 3air.

The platform will include DeFi, staking, yield farming and credit line building to give users access to microcredit. Learn2Earn, Play2Earn and SocialFi modules allow users to earn tokens in an interactive and educational way. The Internet is delivered to users via a wireless mesh network, where you have an incentive to become an access point operator, increase network stability and coverage, and earn additional tokens.

Who is on the team?

The company’s team consists of crypto veterans, experienced blockchain developers and professionals with more than 30 years of experience in the telecommunications industry. Together with the company’s CEO, Sandi Bitenc, they bring together the skills needed to create a company that delivers value in both the “real world” and blockchain space.

In recent months, 3air has met and partnered with African governments and organizations. A notable cooperation is the partnership with the Africa Chamber of Digital Commerce. Together with the Nigerian Ministry of Communications and Digital Economy, they will drive the ACOFDC mesh training program for no-code low-code visual programming technology in Africa. Its goal is to train and certify 3.5 million African youth in Dittofi no-code visual programming to tackle unemployment and accelerate an inclusive digital economy in Africa.

Under the hood

The 3AIR token will be launched on BNB Chain and will become a multi-chain token in the future to give users broader access.

The 3air platform is based on the SKALE network. SKALE is a high-performance, multi-chain network that offers a scalable solution on the Ethereum blockchain, with zero-gas end-user fees, superior scaling, and fast transactions.

The 3AIR token will be the platform’s native token, used to operate network transactions and purchase all services provided by 3air. New services such as secured microloans and a loyalty program will also be built around the 3AIR token.

The token has a limited supply and will be used by the community to control the platform once the project launches its own Decentralized Autonomous Organization (DAO). Approximately 10% of the token supply will be used to reward holders who decide to place their tokens in the forthcoming liquidity pool.
