Nostalgia is a powerful force; Everyone loves to think of beautiful memories. It’s a feeling that companies often try to create for precisely this reason. People are just more likely to believe something they feel connected to.

The blockchain industry has high potential, countless use cases and a lot of capital. It’s a venture into which almost every company seems to be trying, for better or for worse. It’s also a gamble that invites old companies out of the woodwork and they try to capitalize on their nostalgia factor.

In recent years, investors have seen several old and forgotten brands reemerge. These brands want to reinvigorate themselves by capitalizing on the crypto and NFT hype. While not all have legitimate use cases, they do garner attention as investors recall these brands from days of yore.

If you’re interested in checking out some of the most popular nostalgic crypto projects right now, here are some of the best bets.

Nostalgic Crypto Projects: RadioShack (RADIO-USD)

To be clear, RadioShack is not a “zombie project” – it still operates an electronics retail store. Since filing for bankruptcy in 2015, the company has turned to e-commerce, operates a website and operates a store Amazon (NASDAQ:AMZN). However, now it’s trying to shake things up and get people talking about the RadioShack brand again through crypto.

First announced in December 2021, RadioShack is pivoting into the blockchain market with its own cryptocurrency RADIO, a token underlying the recently launched RadioShack Swap platform. The goal of this token is to hopefully bridge crypto with other larger brands to drive the ubiquity of digital assets.

RadioShack Swap is a pretty typical exchange. Its advantage derives from its focus on creating the deepest possible liquidity pools. As the life of the RadioShack Swap goes on, it will be interesting to see how it stacks up against others.

BlockbusterDAO

BlockbusterDAO is unique in that the project is not the old Blockbuster team coming together to reclaim the company’s former glory. Instead, the project is simply made up of Blockbuster fans fondly reminiscing about the days of renting videos from a retail store.

A DAO is a collective of people who come together for a common goal. What sets DAOs apart from other interest groups is that they exist on the blockchain in one form or another. In the case of BlockbusterDAO, the community is attempting to create a blockchain-based, decentralized streaming platform for movies, TV, and games.

The aim of the Blockbuster project is to raise the necessary funds to purchase Blockbuster’s intellectual property dish network (NASDAQ:COURT). Dish bought the Blockbuster assets over 10 years ago after the company filed for bankruptcy. Once these assets are secured, the DAO can launch its streaming service entirely under the Blockbuster name.

Nostalgic Crypto Projects: BitTorrent (BTT-USD)

BitTorrent has existed in its blockchain form since 2019. While not necessarily surprising, it’s worth noting that BitTorrent is perhaps the most successful case of a nostalgic brand turning to crypto.

The company was acquired by Layer-1 Dapp Network in 2018 Tron (TRX USD). A year later, the network launched the BitTorrent crypto project, a blockchain spin of the BitTorrent service.

BitTorrent was already designed with decentralization in mind. The peer-to-peer file-sharing network allowed multiple users to carry equal weight of a file transaction, allowing for faster speeds. This is how the project still works today.

However, Tron equipped the project with a BTT token that rewards users for transactions on the network. So far, the project is proving to be quite successful, with the BTT crypto boasting a market cap of over $1.5 billion.

LimeWire

BitTorrent and LimeWire go hand in hand. So it’s only right that after the success of BitTorrent, a LimeWire crypto project is emerging. In fact, it looks like the file-sharing platform is about to have its own rebirth, but LimeWire is taking a different tack.

In March, investors learned that LimeWire was coming back after a 12-year hiatus. This time the project focuses on NFTs instead of file sharing. NFTs are a booming market and a lucrative new way for artists and celebrities to sell digital memorabilia. LimeWire will complement this market with its own music-based NFT trading platform.

Beginning with the project’s launch in May, users will be able to buy rare music tokens from things like demos, unreleased or limited music, as well as other digital goods. In anticipation of the market’s release, LimeWire has already raised $10 million in a private token sale.

Nostalgic crypto projects: MoviePass

MoviePass might not be the oldest company here, having shut down in 2019, but it’s certainly memorable. The original service, which allowed users to pay $10 a month for unlimited movie tickets, was highly unsustainable. A reorganization and a cap on films per month attempted to save the company. However, it wasn’t enough.

Well, now the company is back with its original CEO and is trying to use crypto for its rebranding.

Rather than operating a monthly membership program, MoviePass 2.0 allows users to purchase tickets using crypto credit. Users can earn these credits by watching ads in the MoviePass app. The catch is that the app uses eyeball tracking software that forces users to actually watch. The revised product is scheduled for release in summer 2022.
