The cost of an Apple iPhone has only increased over the years. But has the iPhone price surpassed the price of BTC or ETH over the past decade? Not even close, according to a new report from the folks at CoinGecko. The CoinGecko research team did a deep dive into BTC and ETH price archives, looking back more than a decade and comparing crypto prices to iPhone MSRPs.
Let’s take a look at the CoinGecko report and its key findings.
iPhone prices are falling over the decades…measured in BTC & ETH
Following the release of the iPhone 13 and the announcement of the new iPhone 14, we learned that the standard iPhone 14 models start at $799 and their pre-order window has just opened. A key takeaway from CoinGecko’s findings is that the retail price of an iPhone has actually remained reasonably stable over the past decade — from the iPhone 4S, where CoinGecko’s research window begins.
The retail price of the 4S was $649.00 and today’s 14 of $799.00 represents an increase of about 25% over the past decade, not adjusting for inflation. The iPhone’s top prices in 2017 and 2018 are seen with the X and XS, respectively, with both models costing $999.00. Check out how these prices have evolved with the price of Bitcoin below:
In 13 models released in the last 11 years, only 3 models saw their bitcoin equivalent increase from the following year. Similar sentiments have existed when comparing its price to ether since it emerged in 2015. In only three cases in the last nine iPhone versions was a phone in ETH more expensive than the previous model:

Notes from the CoinGecko report
There are a few additional key callouts from the CoinGecko report:
- The price slide in the market this year: BTC hit highs of nearly $70,000 earlier this year before falling back to earth. This resulted in the largest percentage increase from one model to the next, resulting in 13 models priced at 0.0178 BTC over the last year becoming 14 models priced more than double the 0.0424 BTC. Bitcoin is of course also the primary market mover among altcoins, so a similar sentiment can be expressed for ETH, which has seen a corresponding surge from 0.2 ETH last year to 0.5 ETH this year.
- A solid investment? Relatively speaking: Since the iPhone 4S was released just over a decade ago, BTC and ETH have gained almost 500,000% and 250,000%, respectively. Compare that to a 23% increase in iPhones. This is to be taken with a pinch of salt – it’s almost apples and oranges – but worth considering when we consider the growth and respect crypto assets have garnered over the years.
