Blockstream CEO Adam Back responded to Bitcoin (BTC) core developer Luka Dashjr's recent move to scrap Bitcoin ordinals, saying the Bitcoin proponent “can't stop JPEGs on Bitcoin.”
Plans to kick out Bitcoin ordinals planned
Earlier this month, Dashjr expressed his displeasure about the emergence of Bitcoin Ordinals, citing that “Inscription,” as they are sometimes called, exploits a vulnerability in Bitcoin Core to spam the blockchain, thereby causing network congestion. He believes that fixing this vulnerability before the release of the expected v27 update will mean the end of the reign of Ordinals and BRC-20.
Before the launch and launch of Bitcoin Ordinals, Bitcoin Core users were allowed to limit the additional data size in transactions. Over the last decade they have been able to achieve this by indulging in the -datacarriersize setting. Enrollment can confuse the system and make it think that the user data is program code, thereby providing a strategy to circumvent the limit.
Dashjr's plan to end the reign of Bitcoin Ordinals and BRC-20 was met with some negative reactions from members of the crypto community, and Back happens to be one of them. The Blockstream CEO seems very confident that Dashjr cannot do anything about these “JPEGS” on BTC.
“…complaining will only make them do it more. Try to stop them and they will do it in even worse ways. “The high fees encourage Layer 2 adoption and force innovation,” Back shared on the X app, urging the Bitcoin core developer to “relax and build things.”
Dashjr refused to agree with Back, instead repeating that it was possible to stop “them.” He further pointed out a trend in the industry where a concept is not explored before it is written off, implying that one cannot draw a conclusion unless one has tried it.
BTC ordinals are good for miners
Some members of the crypto community agree with Back about the higher fees. They believe that miners' profits have increased significantly since the launch of Bitcoin Ordinals and BRC-20. Therefore, their shutdown may result in losses for Bitcoin miners, a development that could prove costly.
In response, Dashjr clarified that Bitcoin works by consensus and that the majority of miners are honest and do not harm the blockchain.
Meanwhile, the call for Bitcoin ordinals is still growing. According to a report from Coingape, inscriptions have been arriving daily a massive 400,000, with trading volume shooting to $40,000 and gas fees hitting new highs.
