Adam Back submits previously unpublished emails from Satoshi Nakamoto in Craig Wright's trial

Adam Back revealed his early correspondence with Bitcoin inventor Satoshi Nakamoto as part of his testimony in the Crypto Open Patent Alliance (COPA) v. Craig Wright trial in a British court on February 22.

Back is testifying against Wright, who claims to be the creator of Bitcoin and wants to assert a copyright claim on the Bitcoin white paper and related materials.

COPA noted that Wright’s claim “halts the development of Bitcoin.” [and] Developers are frightened and silent.” According to the group, the outcome is a matter of public interest and the security of Bitcoin developers.

The e-mails

In an email, Nakamoto confirmed Back's Bitcoin precursor Hashcash and wrote:

“I am preparing to publish a white paper that references your Hashcash white paper and I wanted to make sure I had the proper citation.”

Nakamoto described what would become Bitcoin as a version of e-cash – a technology offered by David Chaum's DigiCash company until 1998.

In another email, Back suggested that Nakamoto learn about a proposal called B-Money from Wei Dai. Nakamoto specifically told Back that he had not read the B-Money website, but said he would credit the author in his article. B-Money is cited in the latest Bitcoin white paper.

The development is notable as Wright has previously claimed that he was inspired by B-Money when developing Bitcoin. However, the email suggests that Nakamoto only knew about this a few weeks before Bitcoin was introduced.

In his written testimony, Back said that the discussion between him and Nakamoto was minimal and he only became interested in Bitcoin as a contributor years later.

According to Back:

“It wasn’t a detailed conversation and we didn’t go into much detail.”

He also said he had never published the emails before.

Back's statement

During his testimony, Back highlighted contradictions that could support COPA's case against Wright based on his second testimony.

Back said based on his emails that he did not believe B-Money influenced Nakamoto. He also argued against Wright's claim that he opposed any attempt to create digital money.

Additionally, Back disputed Wright's claim that Bitcoin is based on a different algorithm than Hashcash, pointing out that its own Hashcash v.0 predates the alternative algorithm.

COPA's case against Wright began on February 5 and has taken several twists since then.

Wright has stood by his stance and rejected COPA's allegations of forgery and plagiarism. Meanwhile, various COPA members and early Bitcoin contributors who interacted with Nakamoto have made statements refuting his claim to have created Bitcoin.
