- Mt.Gox Bitcoin Exploit took place in 2014.
- The exploit remains the largest bitcoin exploit in cryptocurrency history.
- However, Mt.Gox creators can start receiving their bitcoins this month.
Mt.Gox creditors might have a reason to smile after the exchange’s January statement indicated that creditors could start receiving their bitcoin (BTC) this month.
It’s been around 8 years since the Mt. Gox hack occurred in early 2014, resulting in a loss of around 850,000 BTC, which is worth more than $20.060 billion in Bitcoin’s value today, making it the worst Bitcoin hack hack of all time, as detailed in our bitcoin stats research.
Most Mt.Gox creditors have given up hope of getting their bitcoins back as the problem has dragged on for years. A Mt. Gox believer, Adam Back, who is also Blockstream CEO, said via Telegram:
“Well for myself I pretty much wrote off the bitcoin I had on Mt. Gox back in 2014 as a loss so philosophically anything I get back now is a cold storage bonus. It has dragged on for many more years than anyone expected, so it is sure to be welcomed by all creditors to finally be paid.”
Early repayments start from March 10th
According to Mt.Gox’s January statement, creditors are expected to start seeing bitcoin early redemptions starting March 10th. The early repayment process is scheduled to continue over a period of approximately seven months to September 30, 2023.
Early repayments include early lump sums and interim payments. Further repayment amounts are to be paid later.
Mt.Gox creditors should register with and designate an exchange to receive repayments on their behalf. However, exchanges have given different deadlines for processing payments. For example, crypto exchange BitGo said it will take them around 20 days to process the refunds, while Kraken said it could take up to 90 days to process the payments.
Bitcoin amount to be paid back
It is not clear how much bitcoin will be returned to Mt.Gox creditors during the redemption period. However, it is clear that it will be part of Mt.Gox’s balance sheet, which according to a balance sheet in 2019 is about 142,000 BTC, 143,000 BCH and 69 billion yen. Not much has changed on the balance sheet since then.
Applicants are expected to receive approximately 21% of the civil remediation claim value as exchange rates have been revalued since the time the bankruptcy was filed.
According to a moderator of the MtGoxInsolvency subreddit, the first 200,000 yen of each creditor’s claim will be paid in yen. If the claim is greater than 200,000 yen, creditors choose crypto and cash, receiving 71% of the repayment in crypto and 29% in cash after the initial payment.
