Agricultural entrepreneur Chapainawabganj’s innovative mango cultivation technique doubles the yield
Agro-entrepreneur and mango exporter Ismail Khan Shamim has attracted widespread attention by introducing an ultra-high density mango farming technique that has doubled yields.
Shamim’s innovative approach has set an example of sustainable and high-yield farming practices that could transform the mango production landscape of the entire district.
His orchard in Academy Mor area of Shibganj upazila now presents an impressive sight: every tree is laden with lush mango bunches.
Shamim’s journey began six years ago when he traveled to Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu, India, where he was inspired by the concept of ultra-high density mango farming. After his return, he set out on a mission to implement this innovative method in his hometown.
Traditionally, eight to twelve trees are planted per bigha of land, but in his orchard, he has adopted the new approach and planted 224 trees at a small spacing of 9.5 feet by 6.5 feet.
Explaining the rationale for his method, Shamim said unlike traditional techniques that often took decades to fill the vacant land, his approach enabled the area to be fully utilized within just three years.
This accelerated the yield schedule coupled with controlled tree height, optimized maintenance, reduced costs and facilitated fruit harvesting.
Shamim said: “This farming method is unrivaled in achieving higher yields in a shorter period of time and maximizing land use efficiency.”
The benefits of Shamim’s new technique are already evident; Mangoes worth TK 3 lakh have already been sold this season. Each batch of mangoes fetches a reasonable price of Tk 10,000 and Shamim expects to make a profit this year after five years of garden development.
Shamim’s mango farming method has attracted great interest among local farmers.
Taufiqul Islam, a mango farmer from Manaksha Choudhurtola area, said, “I am impressed with this new method of mango cultivation and seek advice from Shamim Bhai to adopt this method for my own orchard.”
Salauddin, another local mango farmer, said, “Shamim Bhai has introduced a revolutionary way of growing mangoes. I intend to repeat this technique in my garden.”
Agro-entrepreneurs such as Samiul Azam and Jasim Akram highlighted the benefits of easy orchard maintenance and the potential for increased mango production in the district.
Md. Mokhlesur Rahman, the chief scientific officer of Chapainawabganj Regional Horticulture Research Center, explained that ultra-high density cultivation, characterized by narrow tree spacing, can significantly increase mango yields.
He said: “With this method, the land is fully utilized within three years, compared to traditional farming where it could take a decade or more to achieve the same results.”
He also said the method reduces costs, improves fruit quality and ensures mangos remain easily accessible for harvest.
Encouraged by the promising results, Rahman and Dr. Palash Sarkar, deputy director of the Agriculture Extension Department in Chapainawabganj, actively promotes ultra-high density mango cultivation through training and guidance of local farmers.
