AgriLife increased yield per hectare by 8% by working on the ground. Call it magic!

introduction

AgriLife is a global agrifood manufacturer that acts as a supplier to major food processors. Their land areas are estimated at several million hectares in three countries (India, China, Thailand).

Rather than acquiring more land, they recently decided to increase yield by upgrading their technology on the existing properties. After conducting costly manual soil sampling, they found inconsistencies on their farms and concluded that many parameters they used on their farms ranged from fertilizer use to use of agricultural sectors that should not be used and vice versa.

They decided to contact us, SmartCloudFarming, to validate these results, which were not exactly spatially accurate as this was done through manual sampling. We introduced our soil analysis system to them, starting at five large farms covering 43,000 hectares. We found a valuable finding that showed these samples were wrong in many ways. We were able to provide them with comprehensive mapping with site-specific analysis showing the characteristics of their properties. Additionally, we included an analysis of soil organic carbon from last year that yielded incredible insights. This allowed them to customize their operations with an unprecedented level of specificity. By switching to what is necessary, these farms have seen their yield increase dramatically in six months, while pesticide use has decreased. AgriLife even used less land overall to achieve this fantastic result.

The customer

AgriLife is a global multi-crop producer that has served as a key supplier to major food processors since 1972. Their land stock is estimated at several million hectares in three countries (India, China, Thailand) and hundreds of farmers in the community.

For the past 20 years, they have managed their business with a technology-centric approach, understanding the industry as scientific fact. Knowing that if something can be measured, it can be improved.

The challenge

The top players in the industry have only gotten bigger over the years and staying profitable, competitive and dominant is no easy task. A new company with better technology can easily tackle an old company full of experience and track record in no time. As AgriLife fully understands this, they have had to increase their production yield as if they had acquired additional land. The challenge was that they only had to achieve this by optimizing existing farms and lots. To do that, they needed a clear, real-time understanding of what was going on in their soils. A true-to-life representation of the exact condition characteristics of the soil on your farm.

The solution

SmartCloudFarming implemented its Agri-Tech Scientific Measurement package, specifically the Soil Analytics Service, through high-resolution satellite imagery. We have created an accurate model of their surface up to 30 cm deep, in addition to detailed maps of minerals, soil organic carbon and soil texture.

The results

Using the 3D soil property maps, specific anomalies were identified in many areas, which helped the company understand where to apply pesticide water and redesign the crop distribution with a tailored fertilization schedule.

  • Yield increased drastically within 6 months.
  • We used fewer pesticides.
  • We’ve used less land, saving resources from lands that will never give way.

“We did this as a leap of faith. But the results themselves show what SmartCloud Farming can achieve. It proves that the scientific approach to agriculture is the approach of the future. Of better companies, higher returns and a greener world.” – [E.C., AgriLife ].
