Altcoins are approaching all-time highs in February 2024

The prices of some mega-cap altcoins, including Optimism (OP) and Kaspa (KAS), are on the verge of new all-time highs thanks to increased institutional interest in the cryptocurrency sector.

Thanks to the billions of dollars flowing into Bitcoin ETFs, crypto investors appear to be reinvesting their profits into altcoins.

After weeks of relentless rallying between January 23rd and February 16th, the global altcoin sector has grown by $108 billion as some mega-cap altcoins are on the verge of hitting new all-time highs this month.

Kaspa (KAS) price: 7% from all-time high

Kaspa (KAS) is a Layer 1 Proof-of-Work (PoW) cryptocurrency that is currently ranked 31st on the global crypto charts with a market cap of $3.2 billion. Through its GHOSTDAG protocol, Kaspa combines the security and decentralization of a PoW architecture with the high block rates and minimal confirmation times of a Proof of Stake (PoS) network.

KAS has achieved significant price gains over the past three weeks, outperforming not only prominent PoW coins including Bitcoin (BTC), Bitcoin Cash (BCH), and Litecoin (LTC), but also the entire altcoin market.

Between January 23rd and February 16th, the price of KAS increased by 56%, resulting in a $1.1 billion increase in market capitalization. With another 7% gain, KAS will surpass its previous global high of $0.16 on November 19th.

Compared to the $108 billion growth in total market cap, excluding BTC and ETH, KAS has attracted about 1% of all capital inflows into the altcoin market over the past three weeks.

Why is the price of Kaspa (KAS) increasing?

Bitcoin’s upcoming halving is a dominant narrative behind Kaspa’s recent growth spurt. Industry experts predict that over 20% of Bitcoin miners will go offline when block rewards are reduced from 6.25 BTC to 3.13 BTC in April 2024.

Many miners could direct their resources to alternative proof-of-work networks like Kaspa that offer more attractive returns.

Therefore, investors appear to be pouring funds into KAS coin to take advantage of the potential upside from the fallout from the upcoming Bitcoin halving. This could effectively push the KAS price towards a new all-time high in the coming weeks.

Optimism (OP) price: 9% from all-time high

Optimism (OP) is a well-known Layer 2 blockchain based on Ethereum. Optimism benefits from the security of the Ethereum mainnet and offers improved scalability through its innovative, optimistic rollups.

Like other Layer 2 scaling solutions, the OP allows cryptocurrency investors to conduct faster and cheaper Defi transactions without primarily interacting with the Ethereum mainnet.

The OP token has caught the attention of investors amid increased demand for Defi transactions triggered by the crypto market rally.

Between January 23 and February 16, Optimism's price outperformed the market average, increasing by 53% and increasing its market capitalization by approximately $1 billion. On February 15th, the OP price peaked at just 10%, down from its all-time high of $4.30 set on January 12th.

Why is Optimism (OP) price rising?

The ongoing OP price increase appears to be largely driven by industry-wide demand for Defi services.

While Optimistic roll-ups were launched in 2019, the OP governance token was only launched in June 2022. However, despite being relatively new to the market compared to Polygon (MATIC), Optimism has quickly become one of the most sought-after Ethereum scaling solutions in the past year.

Additionally, the chart shows that Optimsm briefly overtook the Polygon network as its TVL peaked at $927.6 million on January 11, the same day OP price hit an all-time high.

This close correlation between OP price and TVL growth trends highlights that fundamental demand for Defi solutions is the main catalyst for the ongoing rally.

Optimism hosts over 100 protocols, the largest being Synthetix (SNX), a derivatives exchange, Uniswap (UNI), a DEX, and Velodrome (VELO), an AMM.

With demand for these key Defi services still rising, OP is expected to close the 10% gap and hit a new all-time high in the coming weeks.
