As an integral part of Techstars, a global seed accelerator known for its significant investments in over 250 Web3 startups, Pete Townsend offers a unique perspective on what it takes to succeed in this rapidly evolving space.
His expertise ranges from identifying promising startups for accelerator programs to promoting entrepreneurial success through tailored mentoring. With a keen eye for the latest trends and the ever-changing technology landscape, he shares his thoughts on various aspects of Web3, including gaming, fan platforms, stablecoins and the importance of a robust startup network.
Cointelegraph: Techstars has invested in more than 250 Web3 startups, with Chainalysis valued at $8.6 billion and Arweave being some of the standout names. Can you explain the core criteria you consider when selecting startups for your accelerator programs?
Pete Townsend: When investing at the pre-seed level, the strength and adaptability of the founding team is the most important criterion. We also want the founders to focus on solving a problem for a huge market and do well in acquiring users from that market.
Their progress with the product is also crucial, but sometimes we invest in founders despite their product or idea because we truly believe in those founders’ ability to execute (and pivots are the norm!).
In Web3 in particular, we want to understand how the founders are contributing to building the decentralized internet, whether they are building a tokenized economy or a centralized company, and how they are driving the onboarding of Web3’s first one billion users.
CT: Mentoring is a cornerstone of Techstars’ approach to driving entrepreneurial success. How do you ensure that the mentoring you offer is tailored to the individual needs and challenges of each startup?
PT: We connect startups with mentors who have relevant industry experience and expertise. The startup’s current challenges, strategic goals and mentoring strengths are taken into account.
Regular check-ins and structured feedback sessions ensure mentoring remains in sync with the startup’s evolving needs. With our Web3 program, we are doubling the number of mentors who can sell, develop products or fundraise on Web3.

CT: With your recent investments in startups like JR Studio and SonX, you can’t help but notice the focus on gaming and fan platforms. Do you think this is a key factor in the widespread adoption of Web3?
PT: Absolutely. Gaming and fan platforms demonstrate Web3’s potential to transform everyday activities into more immersive and rewarding experiences. By tapping into these sectors, we not only diversify the blockchain ecosystem, but also promote use cases that could lead to mass adoption due to their widespread appeal.
However, this is only one of our three areas, as GameFi and fan platforms in general are centralized companies that drive Web3 user onboarding, and we also invest heavily in Web3 projects focused on decentralization and tokenized concentrate economies.
CT: Techstars recently supported DLTPAY, a stablecoin-focused DeFi wallet that offers Web3 payments in the EVM Layer 2 ecosystem. Are stablecoins on their way to becoming the standard for e-commerce and international money transfers?
PT: Stablecoins could become the killer app for crypto, and their adoption is growing beyond their popularity as a means of payment on centralized crypto exchanges. Behind the scenes of international remittance platforms, we see countless proposals for the use of stablecoins.
With improved stablecoin regulatory systems in the works worldwide, we expect USD-based stablecoins to soon become an option for e-commerce, particularly in less developed markets with inflationary pressures.

CT: The mutual exchange of ideas is often cited as a benefit of being part of the Techstars network. Could you share any collaborations or insights that emerged from the interaction between different startups within the Techstars ecosystem?
PT: One of the most exciting aspects of the Techstars network is the opportunities it offers. We’ve had portfolio companies collaborate with each other, resulting in a new approach to user experience that leverages the strengths of both technologies.
For example, Protico’s universal chat interface from our 2023 Techstars Web3 class is now integrated into the platforms of a number of other course participants.
A good day to share something exciting here 🚀@protico_io has been selected to join the prestigious @Techstars family as part of the cutting-edge @techstarsweb3 program! Additionally, we are the only startup whose entire crew is from Asia.https://t.co/P1WTYugbFm

CT: The Techstars Web3 Accelerator works primarily through online sessions with occasional face-to-face interactions. Given the momentum behind remote work, is it likely that more Techstars programs will join this format?
PT: Web3 is global and borderless, just like Techstar’s Web3. Although most of our program content is delivered virtually, we will meet at the beginning, middle, and end of the 13th week program.
Beyond the Web3 factor, we also operate the program this way so that founders can get the most out of the Techstars experience, even if they are unable to relocate for the duration of the program. We modeled our Web3 program format after Techstars’ successful Techstars Anywhere Remote Accelerator, so we are not alone in this format.
CT: Finally, what advice can you give to aspiring startups and entrepreneurs looking to secure a place in the Techstars network and where can they submit their applications?
PT: My advice is to focus on building a strong founding team, have a clear and scalable business model, and build a product that solves a real problem in a unique way. Applications can be submitted via the Techstars Web3 website. There you will find detailed information about the application process and program details. We look forward to seeing how you plan to make a name for yourself in the Web3 space!
Looking forward, the potential of stablecoins and the integration of Web3 technologies in sectors such as e-commerce and international money transfers offer exciting opportunities for innovation and growth. Pete Townsend’s advice to aspiring startups is invaluable in this regard: prioritize a solid team base, a scalable business model, and a unique problem-solving approach.
