An Introductory Guide to Using ERC-20 Meme Tokens in Decentralized Exchange (DEX) Liquidity Pools | by El Gringo MD | Oct. 2023
What are liquidity pools?
Liquidity pools are at the heart of decentralized exchanges and allow traders to exchange tokens without relying on a traditional order book system. These pools consist of cryptocurrency tokens that users provide as liquidity, usually two. In exchange for providing these tokens, users receive a portion of the trading fees generated in the pool. Independent users called Liquidity Providers (LPs) provide the same value of two tokens held by the pool. For example, if a pool contains $ETH and $MONG, a user must provide the pool with the same value of $ETH and $MONG. In return, liquidity providers receive liquidity tokens that represent their share of the pool.
Liquidity pools help solve the problem of illiquidity in decentralized exchanges. While traditional exchanges require a buyer for every seller, liquidity pool users can trade directly from the pool without the need for another party to settle their trade. The advantage for liquidity providers is that they earn transaction fees for trades in their pool and sometimes additional rewards. However, there is a risk called “impermanent loss” that they may face. This happens when the value of the tokens in the pool fluctuates significantly.
What is a DEX?
A decentralized exchange (DEX) is a platform that allows cryptocurrency trading without the need for an intermediary like a centralized exchange. DEXs are based on blockchain technology and governed by smart contracts, making them resistant to censorship and fraud. Unlike traditional exchanges (also known as centralized exchanges), DEXs do not require users to deposit funds into an exchange-controlled wallet. Instead, transactions take place directly between the user’s wallets, improving the user’s control over their funds.
DEXs ideally fit the decentralized ethos of blockchain technology and aim to eliminate middlemen and consolidate power. However, due to the distributed nature of blockchain, there may also be user experience issues and slower transaction times. Nevertheless, their autonomy, privacy and control make them a crucial part of the cryptocurrency landscape.

What is ERC-20?
The Ethereum Request for Comment 20 (ERC-20) is the universal standard guide for producing fungible tokens on the Ethereum blockchain network. Unlike Non-Fungible Tokens (NFTs), which have unique properties and cannot be exchanged, fungible tokens, such as those created under the ERC-20 standard, are interchangeable because they have identical properties.
ERC-20 provides developers with the architecture to create tokens with smart contract functionalities that can be smoothly integrated into various services and products. These tokens symbolize different entities – ownership rights, access rights, various cryptocurrencies or any asset that does not have an intrinsic singularity but can be transferred from one party to another.
