Over 100,000 wallets have used Aztec Connect
Aztec, a team working on privacy-focused scaling solutions for Ethereum, plans to shut down the Aztec Connect Layer 2 network.
Aztec said it will disable the deposit contract for its Connect product on March 21, blocking users from transferring assets to the network. The rollup will continue for 12 months to facilitate user withdrawals before retiring its sequencer on March 21, 2024.
The team is urging users to withdraw their assets before March 2024, noting that after the deadline, users will have to “run withdrawal software or rely on community-powered sequencers.”
“While withdrawals will always be possible, after March 21, 2024, they will become significantly more burdensome,” Aztec said.
Connect’s total locked value peaked at over $17 million on Tuesday, according to L2Beat. Aztec said more than 100,000 unique wallets executed transactions on the network.
Released codebase
Aztec has also made the entire code base for Connect open source, encouraging community members to fork, deploy, or develop a new version of the rollup. “We would like to see an independently operated Aztec Connect and are willing to fund it,” it said.
Connect and other rollups work by bundling transactions on Layer 2 networks and transmitting them to the Ethereum mainnet for completion.
Connect is a zero-knowledge rollup (ZK), which means it’s backed by ZK proofs. ZK Rollups offer more speed and privacy than competing designs, but typically suffer from poor Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM) compatibility — meaning developers need to make significant changes to port their code between the Ethereum mainnet and Layer 2 .
Aztec launches private DeFi platform on Ethereum
Aztec’s zk.money DeFi aggregator allows DeFi apps like Lido and Curve to be used privately.
Aztec plans to focus on its next ZK Rollup solution.
The team is also working on a “universal language without knowledge” called Noir, which describes Noir as the easiest way to write ZK-based programs. Aztec said Noir is EVM compatible and will be the native smart contract language for its next rollup product.
The ZK Rollup sector is becoming increasingly competitive, with Polygon, Matter Labs, Scroll and Consensys all aiming to provide ZK Rollups with EVM compatibility in the coming months.
