Balancer discovers critical vulnerability in liquidity pools

Balancer has discovered a critical vulnerability that is affected a number of V2 pools within its ecosystem.

Punctually at 15:52 UST, the Balancer team informed its community of a very real threat to their funds. Although the team has managed to secure much of the Total Value Locked (TVL), funds are still at risk.

Balancer has paused several pools as a proactive measure to reduce potential threats. These breaks will remain in place until further notice. Users holding liquidity in these affected Liquidity Pools (LPs) are advised to implement their withdrawal strategies without delay. Pools include Mainnet, Polygon, Arbitrum, Optimism, Avalanche, Gnosis, Fantom, and zkEVM.

Two hours later, Balancer released an update with good news. The vast majority of funds in the balancer ecosystem have been confirmed as safe.

Furthermore, the vulnerability only poses a risk to 1.4% of the total TVL. This is limited to the boosted pools only.

The balancer user interface (UI) helps to share important information about this issue with all affected users.

A previous forum post confirmed the successful mitigation of over 80% of vulnerable pools. However, approximately 4% of Balancer’s TVL remains vulnerable to potential exploitation. Currently, no hacker has exploited the vulnerability.

Balancer assumes that the security of funds within mitigated pools marked as “mitigated” is intact. However, it urges users to expedite the transition to safer pools or initiate withdrawals.

The platform classifies pools it hasn’t successfully defused as “at risk” and urges users who are part of those pools to make immediate withdrawals to protect their investments.

Only 1.4% of TVL are at risk

Balancer introduced a personalized interface (UI 518) that allows users to see if their connected wallet is linked to the affected pools.

A full report is in progress detailing the vulnerability and subsequent steps taken. Additionally, for easy reference, Balancer has made the full list of affected pools available in the comments section of the aforementioned forum post.
