Recently, The Guardian took a closer look at the Buttcoin subreddit community, which was founded in July 2011 and currently has around 137,000 members.
On September 9th, The Guardian published a report on the Buttcoin community on the Reddit platform. One post the report highlights is titled “I’m Addicted, I Need Help,” which was written about three months ago:
“I just love watching the line drop too much. I always tell myself “after it breaks that next support line you will be satisfied” but after that there is ALWAYS another lower level. It keeps falling and I keep watching and can’t stop. send help Jk, don’t send help, send popcorn.”
The report goes on to say that “a tech industry worker who regularly visits Buttcoin told the Guardian he stayed up until 3am one night to watch the crash.” This person said:
“I know this may sound pathetic, but I get a dopamine hit when I see Bitcoin price going down. It was so exciting.”
The report added:
“Just like the crypto culture that mocks it, buttcoin has its own memes. Some of them are simply flipping crypto sayings. Instead of barking that token prices are going “to the moon,” Buttcoin users are chanting “to the ground.” But Buttcoin’s most popular jokes take pro-crypto logic and push it to sarcastic extremes. To skewer crypto promoters’ habit of spreading negative news, Buttcoin users comment under stories of cryptocurrency disasters: “This is good for bitcoin.” (Bitcoin has been banned in a major country? Good for Bitcoin. The price of Bitcoin is crashing? Good for Bitcoin. Someone lost their life savings to a Bitcoin scam? You guessed it… good for Bitcoin.)”
Another Buttcoin post highlighted in the report was written about four months ago and is titled “My boyfriend’s whole ass job is crypto and I can’t wait for this shit to be over”:
