ETC TestNets Activate Phoenix Successful, Prepare for MainNet! | by Stevan Lohja | etc_core

The Kotti TestNet successfully activated the Phoenix upgrade on block 2_200_013 or April 15, 2020. The Mordor TestNet successfully activated the Phoenix upgrade on March 9, 2020. With 2 out of 2 TestNets running Phoenix successfully, we are excited to prepare the MainNet activation that would complete the upgrade of the Phoenix network to Ethereum Classic! The schedule is as follows:

Ethereum Classic goes through another network upgrade code named Phoenix (ECIP-1088). The participating core developer stakeholders agreed on February 26, 2020 to accept ECIP-1088.

Phoenix will incorporate Ethereum Foundation Istanbul’s network protocol upgrades on the Ethereum Classic network, further enhancing ETC’s EVM capabilities. Various opcodes will be added to the ETC network, all of which have been used in ETH networks since late 2019. Ethereum Classic significantly improved ETC-ETH compatibility with the Atlantis and Agharta hard forks. While these hard forks made ETC and ETH technically compatible, Phoenix will make them absolutely compatible.

To ensure a successful fork, we encourage consumers to update their node software to a fork-compatible version if they have not already done so. TestNet and MainNet support is currently supported in the following clients.

We strongly recommend ETC node operators to use Core-geth or Hyperledger Besu. Core-geth is managed directly by ETC Core’s protocol provider team and ETC Coop funds ETC support in Hyperledger Besu.

We are aware that a significant number of consumers are using ETC Core’s versions of Multi-geth, but ETC Core no longer maintains Multi-geth. We advise these multi-geth consumers to migrate to core-geth.

OpenEthereum (Parity Ethereum) ETC support is not solidified. We strongly recommend using the recommended software:

It is important that organizations and individuals offering products and services using Ethereum Classic use well-maintained software that follows the consensus of the network community and has dedicated ETC support. Otherwise, your business and customers could be at risk.

Geth-Classic is obsolete and has reached the end of its lifespan. Geth-Classic is no longer maintained for Ethereum Classic, nor is it sufficient for the Phoenix hard fork. We advise geth-classic customers to upgrade to core geth.

Phoenix will break some contracts at 0.003 ETC. These contracts were not actively used and we expect this change to have a minor impact. These contracts are impacted as EIP-1884 introduces new gas prices for the SLOAD (0x54), BALANCE (0x31), and EXTCODEHASH (0x3F) opcodes. Please check the scope of ECIP-1088 to determine if your smart contract is affected.

What changes are included in the Phoenix hard fork?

  • EIP-152: Added precompile Blake2 compression function F
  • EIP-1108: Reducing alt_bn128 precompile gas costs
  • EIP-1344: Added ChainID opcode
  • EIP-1884: Price adjustment for trie-size dependent opcodes
  • EIP-2028: Calldata gas cost reduction
  • EIP-2200: Rebalancing SSTORE net metered gas cost to account for SLOAD gas cost change

What is a hard fork on Ethereum Classic?

A hard fork is a change to the underlying Ethereum Classic protocol, creating new rules to improve the system. The protocol changes are activated at a specific block number. All Ethereum Classic customers must upgrade or they will be stuck in an incompatible chain under the old rules.
