Fidelity’s Director of Global Macro, Jurrien Timmer, recently commented on the state of Bitcoin and compared its current market dynamics to those of gold.
Timmer notes that bitcoin is now moving in sync with gold, but warns that the leading cryptocurrency may be a bit outdated, suggesting a possible overvaluation of the $30,000 mark.
In his analysis, Timmer has highlighted an 88% inverse correlation between Bitcoin and the two-year real TIPS yield, as well as a 63% inverse correlation to the PCE-derived real interest rate. This correlation analysis, based on data since 2018, puts Bitcoin in a similar position to gold in terms of its response to real interest rate drivers.
In layman’s terms, what Timmer is suggesting here is that bitcoin price tends to move in the opposite direction of these two economic indicators. If certain government bond yields rise or inflation rises, we can expect the price of bitcoin to fall in general and vice versa. However, it is important to note that these are only tendencies; They don’t happen every time, and other factors can affect Bitcoin’s price as well.

Timmer interprets this as a sign of Bitcoin’s role as a “strong inflation hedge.” This strong hedging potential, coupled with its growing popularity among investors, has made Bitcoin a highly desirable asset.
The manager’s findings highlight Bitcoin’s strong correlation with gold, but his caution about possible overvaluation of Bitcoin underscores the need for investor caution.
Bitcoin price has fallen to its lowest level since March 17 with a drop of over 12% since May 6, decoupling from traditional risk assets like the Nasdaq.
