Roll updates the Ethereum Social Token platform with memberships and staking

Shortly

  • Social token platform Roll has launched on-chain Ethereum memberships and staking capabilities for developers.
  • Roll is working on an API that will allow creators to sell social tokens across other platforms, potentially including Twitter and Twitch.

Social Tokens provide a way for web creators to build and monetize communities of fans, and ether-based platform roll has just launched two new features – memberships and staking – which will allow creators to offer additional benefits to token backers.

Roll’s membership feature is designed to empower creators, influencers, and DAOs– or decentralized autonomous organizations – the on-chain Ethereum infrastructure to enable subscription tiers similar to the Web2 site Patreon, which establishes different levels of token ownership to allow access to different benefits and perks. And it is also a permissionless and non-custodial-free technology.

For example, if a batch of 10,000 of a creator’s ERC-20 tokens is considered the first tier of access, five such batches (50,000 tokens total) could allow for additional benefits exclusively available to those eligible holders. Creators can also add specific fans to the token allow list so they can purchase specific amounts of tokens before the public launch.

“We see this concept making the Internet better,” said Bradley Miles, co-founder and CEO of Roll decrypt. Miles believes social tokens can bring the “next 100 million users” on board who may not yet have used it Bitcoin or ETH, but are happy to support their favorite YouTubers, Twitch streamers, musicians and other online creators.

In addition to memberships, with Roll’s new staking feature, token creators can then launch liquidity pools to which holders can contribute by staking their tokens or by contributing to the pool, earning rewards in return.

Miles said that social token creators who previously wanted to offer staking rewards had to deal with manual pool setup and asset tracking.

By launching the two features at the same time, Roll seeks to make social tokens not only more beneficial for creators and fans, but also more accessible.

Roll creators can now provide such functionality through a code-free interface without understanding the complexities of Ethereum smart contracts— or pay someone else to do it.

To be clear, Roll’s focus isn’t on Patreon-like delivery of token-gated content like private Twitch streams or exclusive blog posts. Instead, Miles explained, Roll focuses solely on social token infrastructure, while others Web3 startups like campfire and Tellie Use it to give holders special access.

Miles pointed out some roll creators using the new features, e.g. B. Author QuHarrison Terry (The Metaverse Guide), whose 1Q9X token was developed to enable a DAO community to jointly develop initiatives to combat youth illiteracy. said Terry decrypt that Roll’s qualities allowed him to “focus on idea and execution without being bogged down by all the technical details”.

In the meantime, Brady McKenna is the creator of the TIDE token, earned by people watching his Web3-centric Twitch channel, which will tie into an upcoming creator funding platform called StreamTide. McKenna said Roll’s infrastructure helps its viewers get started with crypto without specifically limiting their support to Twitch or any other Web2 platform.

“Staking and memberships are a big step forward if I ever want to expand beyond Twitch,” he explained. “Staking allows my community to learn and experience the DeFi ecosystem in a very safe way with a low barrier to entry – probably one of the lowest in all of crypto.”

While it has been Some are buzzing around social tokens and their potential impact on creators and personalities – such as B. Athletes have started their own by roll and competition platform rally– They haven’t experienced the same kind of boom as NFTs, DeFi, or DAOs. Miles said that Roll had to develop a lot more supporting technology to make creator tokens more profitable.

“The reason I think social tokens haven’t had a real moment yet is that the infrastructure isn’t there,” he explained, comparing it to how gig economy apps like Uber or Grubhub might struggle without established payment tracks.

Roll’s roadmap includes the creation of a software development kit (SDK) and API plug-ins that will allow developers to offer tokens and related functionality directly through other platforms — potentially including Twitter and Twitch — rather than just through the Roll website .

In addition, Miles said the company has become a FinCEN regulated entity and is acquiring state licenses to enable fiat driveways. If social tokens are to become a mainstream phenomenon, they need to be both regulated and easy to acquire for the average internet user, Miles said. The entire development of Roll since 2019 leads to this moment.

“We’ll definitely be there next year,” he said, “and we’ve been building for that for a while.”
